Children's Unit Ward Manager - 37.5 hours - Permanent
We are looking for a natural leader who has the ability to lead our Children's Unit Team to deliver a high quality care for our patients and families, whilst ensuring our teams are well led and operationally effective.
You will have a depth and breadth of both clinical and managerial experience at a Band 6 or above and be looking for the next step within your Paediatric Nursing Leadership Career. Your clinical knowledge base will run in parallel to your leadership acumen to deliver the role of the Children's Unit Manager.

To ensure effective leadership/management of Children's Unit, Children's outpatients & the Children's Observation & Assessement unit.

To assume responsibility for the deployment and supervision of staff where there is a requirement to meet the needs of the service

- To be responsible for the day to day running and organisation of the Childrens Unit (Inpatient Ward and the Observation & Assessment Unit)& Childrens Outpatients team.
- Take responsibility for the planning of the Unit e-roster, to meet patient and dependency needs; making the best use of resources, maintaining appropriate skill mix and reporting any concerns to the Matron.
- Ensure staff are aware of decisions taken about requirements of the department with regard to erosters, and leave. Include and support B6 nursing team in decisions taken, ensuring service needs are met. Full competence at use of/understanding of the e-rostering system.
- Implement and evaluate clinical governance systems ensuring that care is delivered within an appropriate model.
- Promote clinical excellence and clinical governance using recent and relevant evidence based research. Deputise for the Matron as required.
- Disseminate implement and ensure adherence to Trust policies by all members of the team.
- Contribute to the achievement of Trust targets, whilst identifying service development priorities.
- Contribute to action plans related to external reports.
- Manage the department pay/non pay budget, in liaison with the Supplies Department and the Matron; working within wider financial and resource/constraints. Ensure staff are also aware of their responsibilities with reference to pay budget and efficient supplies budgeting.

HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGEMENT:
- Form a cohesive management team with the band 6 team and initiate and participate in team meetings.
- Lead, arrange, co-ordinate and minute own clinical governance and other group meetings and disseminate information to Matron and other members of the team.
- Encourage and support effective intra and inter departmental communication.
- Provide competent and consistent leadership to the department team.
- Be responsible for staff development in accordance with service need and professional development needs, ensuring that appraisals are in place and done in a timely manner.
- Co-ordinate training and development for all staff, ensuring that accurate records are maintained. Formulate and lead specialised training for specific Childrens Unit extended roles, and be responsible for its implementation and teaching.
- Actively participate, and sometimes lead, in recruitment and selection processes and facilitate induction and preceptorship for newly deployed and newly qualified staff.
- Ensure that educational objectives of student, other learners and junior staff are met and facilitated and the progress of each student/learner/member of staff is monitored, alongside and in collaboration with the practice based educator.
- Monitor and manage sickness/absence and act appropriately in accordance with Trust Attendance Management Policy. Input data appropriately and facilitate sickness management in a way, which attempts to reduce absence.
- Perform return to work interviews in an appropriate manner and communicate outcome of discussions and trigger points in the attendance management policy as appropriate. Liaise with HR and attend relevant meetings re: sickness/absence, as required.
- Manage nursing team members in accordance with relevant policies eg: sickness/absence, capability, disciplinary, special leave; and maintain comprehensive records.
- Provide and facilitate clinical supervision in accordance with Trust policy.
- Provide staff e-roster, ensuring satisfactory skill mix meets department requirements and off duty. Supervise and instruct other staff involved in this process.
- Provide undirected cover for the department by using NHSP/additional hours/agency staff, or encouraging staff to be flexible in their working so to provide cover for sickness, utilising budget restriction. Ensure service needs continue to be met and avoid bed closures where possible. Ensure staff are aware of their restrictions/limitations both from a staffing and bed management view in the absence; adhering to patient flow/bed management policy.
