Job responsibilities

SECTION 1- MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:

To plan organise, prioritise and manage own caseload.

Maintain safe working environment in accordance with Health and Safety legislation, trust and departmental policies in relation to self, patients colleagues and equipment.

Maintain professional competence through continuous professional development.

Maintain HCPC registration.

To provide clinical supervision of students and junior staff.

To maintain accurate records of assessments and treatments in accordance with trust and professional standards. Write reports to consultants, general practitioners, podiatrists and other health care professionals.

To provide activity statistics required by the PCT.

To maintain patient information in accordance with Data Protection Act.

To report incidents in accordance with trust policy.

To work to standards set by the Health Profession Council and national standards eg. National Service Frameworks.

To participate in audit as required by the department and trust.

To implement changes in practise and service delivery when necessary, in partnership with colleagues and manager.

Actively contribute and participate in in-service training.

Participate in the personal development review scheme as an attendee

SECTION 2- KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

Work as an autonomous practitioner

To assess and treat patients using knowledge of musculoskeletal pathology. Ability to diagnose and develop treatment plans using clinical reasoning skills.

To continually evaluate the patients progress and change treatment accordingly.

Use of therapeutic handling techniques including palpation skills, manual therapy and manual handling skills.

Good knowledge of all electrotherapy equipment and its safe application.

To gain consent from patients and negotiate and agree treatment goals.

To discuss management of patients care with patients, carers, G.P.s, consultants and other allied health professionals. This involves challenging or negotiating changes to patient management.

SECTION 3- EFFORT AND ENVIRONMENT

Physical:

Handling and moving of equipment and plinths. The post holder will be expected to frequently move the patients trunk and limbs during a treatment session. Manual resistance testing of movements and provide tactile feedback. Frequent bending and squatting whilst demonstrating exercises.

Mental:

Post-holder will be expected to concentrate during treatment sessions and ensure good communication with all patients including those who have impaired understanding and or communication difficulties eg. Impaired speech or hearing or when English is not a first language.

Treatment sessions last on average 30 minutes and the post-holder will be working under a constant degree of pressure.

Emotional:

Need to discuss diagnosis and prognosis of treatment with patients, which may include sensitive or unwelcome news.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

• Degree or equivalent in physiotherapy
• HCPC registration
• Evidence of continual professional development
• Post-graduate experience in a musculoskeletal setting

Skills & Knowledge

Essential

• Confident in clinical knowledge and limitations
• Ability to exercise clinical judgement.
• Time management skills
• Good interpersonal skills
• Ability to travel between sites
• To cover hours between 8am and 6pm
• Willingness to undertake training required for the post
• IT skills appropriate to the post
• Willingness to abide by trust policies and procedures
• Ability to carry out the duties of the post after reasonable adjustment under the terms of The Disability Discrimination Act 1995, have been made
• Evidence of relevant post grad MSK training
• Experience of supervision of students and or junior staff

Desirable

• Member of The CSP
• Post grad courses eg Orthopaedic Medicine, McKenzie etc
• Special Interest in Rheumatology
• Previous experience in Acute Orthopaedic outpatient/inpatient
• Previous experience at band 6 level
• Member of relevant clinical interest group
• Awareness of current trends in the NHS
• Previous experience of audit
