Bolton NHS Foundation Trust

The closing date is 23 January 2025

Job summary

At Bolton NHS Foundation Trust we are looking for a Clinical Coder to join our wonderful Coding team, who are part of the Trusts Informatics Directorate. We have a lot to offer here in Bolton, our staff have told us consistently through the National Staff Survey that we are the best place to work in Greater Manchester so you can be confident that you will be joining a high-performing Trust which looks after and appreciates its workforce.

We offer a hybrid model of working with staff working both off-site and on-site within our coding department at the Royal Bolton Hospital. We also offer a relocation package for candidates who live outside Greater Manchester/Lancashire and who wish to relocate to Bolton to join the Trust.

We are looking for people who have coding experience in an NHS setting, and you will hold the National Clinical Coding Qualification (ACC).

You will analyse and extract diagnostic and procedural information from electronic patient records, patient case notes and other computer systems and assign appropriate codes. Coded data is then used for comparative/planning purposes at both local and National level, Clinical Governance and Finance.

Main duties of the job

You will provide consistently recorded data to well defined standards. The Clinical Coding Department uses the ICD and OPCS classifications to record all diagnoses, procedures and interventions for all in-patient, day case and regular day/night admissions.

You will provide accurate information to support Healthcare Resource Groups in facilitating the Payment by Results process within the NHS.

You will contribute to ensuring the Clinical Coding Team continues to deliver a quality coding service across the organisation by providing accurate and timely clinical coding in accordance with national standards and requirements of clinical coding.

As a Senior Clinical Coder you will be required to demonstrate an extensive understanding of ICD-10 and OPCS4 classifications as well as a thorough understanding of national clinical coding standards and conventions. You will act as a mentor to Trainee Clinical Coders where necessary.

You will be highly organised, with excellent verbal and written communication skills and the confidence to develop effective working relationships with colleagues across disciplines and at all levels within the Trust. The role requires excellent attention to detail and above all, a genuine interest in the recording and analysis of data.

The hospital is one of the busiest hospitals in Greater Manchester for urgent care and is also a regional 'supercentre' for maternity services, babies and children. As an integrated organisation we also provide care and support in the community at over 20 health centres and clinics, including the Bolton One complex in the town centre, as well as services such as district and school nursing. We serve a population of around 270,000 and employ approximately 5,300 staff.

As mentioned earlier in this advert we strive to ensure that our staff can be the best they can be in their role, and we will create a development plan based on your individual needs. We ensure that our staff have regular FABB (For a Better Bolton) catch-up discussions with their manager and our VOICE Values clearly set out what we expect from all our staff whilst in work. Ultimately everything we do in the Trust has patient care at its heart, and your role as Clinical Coder will be so important in ensuring our patients get the best possible care.
