Highly Specialist Pharmacist - Critical Care
Full time 37.5 hours per week. Permanent post
We are looking for a Pharmacist with High Dependency and Critical Care experience to work at Bolton NHS Foundation Trust.
The post holder will be responsible for delivering on long-term strategic plans to ensure a consistent, high-quality clinical pharmacy and medicines optimisation service is delivered to the patients on Critical Care and peripheral areas. The successful candidate will also work closely alongside with the multidisciplinary team to optimise patient outcomes and improve medicines safety in line with GPICS standards. In addition, training and education of junior doctors and pharmacy staff on medicines use and optimisation in critical care settings.
Main duties of the job
This is a highly specialist post with significant autonomy in taking forward developments in Critical Care including service delivery, specialist education and training, audit and research and development. The post holder will be a role model and focal point for ensuring optimum pharmaceutical care to patients within Critical Care in Bolton NHS Foundation Trust and will contribute to all aspects of service developments on Critical Care relating to the Pharmacy service provided.
There is also responsibility for services in the following areas in accordance with Section 1.4 of the Core Standards for Intensive Care Units:-
- As Senior Clinical Pharmacist, ensure the delivery of Clinical Pharmacy services in Critical Care at Bolton NHS Foundation Trust
- To lead on the development of the prescribing protocols for patients in Critical Care
- Provide specialist pharmaceutical advice and support in Critical Care.
- As an Independent Prescriber to prescribe medicines for patients within their area of competence ensuring compliance with the Trust Non-Medical Prescribing Policy.
- Act as a Trust expert on Antimicrobial prescribing
- To ensure the delivery of drug expenditure savings in line with the Divisional cost improvement programme.

Essential
- Vocational Masters Degree in Pharmacy or equivalent
- Pre-registration training and experience
- Membership of The General Pharmaceutical Council.
- Diploma in clinical pharmacy
- Good all round clinical knowledge and practical clinical skills.
Desirable
- Evidence of further education/training in clinical pharmacy practice
- Formal Management qualification (eg diploma or degree)
- Pharmacist Independent Prescriber
- Membership of The Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain.
Experience
Essential
- Post registration hospital experience,
- Post registration hospital experience within a relevant clinical speciality. or equivalent documented clinical experience
- Ability to cope with occasional distressing circumstances eg when dealing with seriously ill patients
- Able to think clearly in stressful situations
- Experience of training and education of both pharmacy staff and other healthcare professionals.
Desirable
- Previous clinical experience in specialised field
- Line management experience
- Experience of appraisal and objective setting
- Evidence of successful multi-disciplinary working
