Job summary
This 12 month post is designed for an ST4+ level trainee or equivalent to gain experience in and develop a sub specialty interest in Geriatric Emergency Medicine.
The Fellow will gain experience in various aspects of Geriatrics and elderly care through time spent working in various departments, with an aim of completing the Diploma in Geriatric Medicine (DGM) from the Royal College of Physicians (RCP). The Fellow will be supervised by a consultant in ED with a special interest in Geriatric Emergency Medicine and will have a named link consultant in Geriatric Medicine.
This post will involve working weekends and out of hours.
Please note that Clinical Fellows are paid on a local pay scale that mirrors Doctors in Training pay scales. Basic salary offered for this role is fixed at £55,329 and will not be uplifted beyond that salary point. Where the role requires out of hours working, evening, weekend and on call enhancements will be added according to a work schedule. It is Trust practice that we offer a set salary for this role and variations will not be considered.
Main duties of the job
To develop their skills and understanding of Geriatric Emergency Medicine, according the syllabus for DGM the Fellow will participate in some of the following:
- Elderly and complex care ward rounds
- Geriatric clinics
- Adult safeguarding team meetings
- Learning from deaths committee
- Frailty in-reach
- Ortho-geriatrics
- Older age mental health
- "Home first" team
- Palliative care
There will be opportunity for the Fellow to lead quality improvement in the department in an area of their interest, such as:
- Creation of a frailty/geriatric area of ED
- "Silver" trauma
- Dementia friendly care
- End of life care
- Supported discharge

The Department has a strong educational background, with an established programme of undergraduate and postgraduate training as well as Consultant representation at local, regional and national level.
