Salaried GP - Urgent Treatment Centre/Emergency Department

Job summary

This 12-month post is designed for a qualified GP to work within the Bolton Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC). We are ideally looking for GPs with an interest in Emergency Medicine and are able to offer applicants the opportunity to rotate between the UTC and Emergency Department as agreed.

The UTC is currently run as a joint service between an out of hours GP provider and the Bolton Emergency Department. Since October 2022, the service was expanded from a traditional GP service, to see additional low acuity patients that meet a specific UTC criteria. A range of senior clinicians from Bolton ED have been working in the UTC to establish this service, and we are now looking to expand our workforce to provide a more robust staffing model.

Main duties of the job

Successful applicants will be expected to work independently within the urgent treatment centre to see and treat patients in a timely manner. Patients requiring further review should be referred accordingly.

Support is provided from the consultant in charge of the ED on shift with the service being located nearby to the ED for any in person discussions that are required.

The service is supported by a nurse associate who is able to support with diagnostics and observations.

About us

The ED operates 24-hour nurse assessment and has a well-established 24-hour nurse practitioner service.

Clinical areas - All clinical areas are equipped to a high standard and consist of:

  • Urgent treatment centre with 4 clinical assessment rooms and reception
  • 6-bay adult resuscitation room
  • Main clinical quadrangle with 12 bays for flexible use; of these 2 are equipped
  • to resuscitation standard, two suitable for private examination
  • A recently built extension area adjacent to the quad with 5 additional cubicles and a 3-bed trolley area
  • A 3 bay rapid assessment/ambulance handover bay
  • 4 ambulatory majors assessment cubicles
  • 7 adult minor injury consultation rooms
  • Ophthalmic/ENT room
  • Mental health room

The Children's Emergency unit, provides an audio visually separate purpose-built area, a safe, efficient and convenient service for the emergency care of sick and injured children and young people up to the age of 16. The children's clinical areas are also equipped to a high standard and consist of:

  • 2 bay resuscitation room
  • 5 consultation rooms
  • 3 observation bays
