An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our Acute Paediatric service at Bolton NHS Trust as our new Matron. We are a forward thinking, friendly unit who care for children aged 0-16 with a range of medical and surgical conditions. In addition to our 28 bedded ward, we have a 9 bedded Assessment unit and a 3 bedded Level 2 High Dependency Unit.

Main duties of the job
Reporting to the Assistant Divisional Nurse Director of Nursing (ADND) the post holder isresponsible for and will have a specific focus on visible, accessible and strong clinical leadership, patient experience and the delivery of safe, timely, high-quality care.
Main Duties include:
Lead the service and quality improvement programmes alongside supporting the operational management of the Division.
Ensuring efficient and effective use of resources and the development and maintenance of the highest standards of patient care and service delivery.
Support the Divisional Nurse Director to deliver safe, compassionate, person centred care that is responsive to the needs of children and families who use our services.
Provide professional and clinical leadership and management within acute paediatric speciality.
Work closely with the Operational Business Manager and Clinical Lead to set clinical standards and monitor quality metrics to provide ongoing assurance.
The Matron will line manage ward and unit managers along with the education and Governance lead and APNPs.
Contribute to the benchmarking of standards of care, development of policies and guidelines and working with other services, contribute to the ongoing improvement of seamless integrated pathways for children and their families.
Responsible for monitoring bed capacity and flow across the ward, assessment unit and High Dependency Unit, ensuring safe staffing is maintained and escalate any issues in a timely manner.
About us
The Acute Paediatric team is led by the Ward Manager with support from the Education and Governance Lead. The team consists of Senior and Junior Sisters, Registered Nurses, Nurse Associates, Play Workers and Heath Care Assistants. In addition, our highly qualified Advanced Paediatric Nurse Practitioners supports the assessment unit. The medical and nursing staff work closely together and decision making is collective.
In Paediatric Outpatients, the Team Leader leads the team in Bolton One and and also works closely with the medical staff to run an efficient service for children.

Clinical
- Work in partnership with Ward Managers and Senior clinical staff to ensure the delivery of quality care is achieved to meet key indicators.

- Ensure ward/clinical areas comply with national standards of cleanliness for NHS.

- Enable all staff to ensure that children and young people and their families are provided with information regarding their care and treatment and have the opportunities to ask questions and discuss concerns about any aspect of care and treatment.

Staffing Management
Responsible for ensuring that the Paediatric Unit is are adequately resourced and organised in order to deliver excellent care.
- Ensure rosters are approved through the e-rostering system, providing assurance that managers have created rosters that are efficient, safe and fair with adequate staffing and skill mix to meet the needs of the service and in accordance with the roster policy.
- Ensure staffing is allocated to areas of service need according to the skill mix and availability fo staff within the service.
- Support the compilation of the bi-annual staffing review.
- Ensure new and expanded responsibilities are developed where appropriate and skill mix changes implemented as required, to ensure appropriate transformation of the workforce linked to local and national initiatives.
- Monitor vacancies/secondments and maternity leave ensuring timely commencement of the recruitment process.
Training and Appraisal
- Ensure all staff have an appraisal with agreed objectives including a personal development plan if required in accordance with the trust values and appraisal calendar.
- Monitor the completion of timely staff inductions within areas of responsibility.
- Ensure a preceptorship package is made available to all newly qualified staff and that support from experienced staff/ buddy/ mentor is made available to them.
