Job summary

The post holder will act as a specialist in education and practice development issues within the Maternity Service, supporting other members of the team including the maternity practice-based educator, ward managers, Lead Midwives, Director of Midwifery/Divisional Director of Nursing, Divisional Manager in development and delivery of high standards of women and family focussed, evidence-based care.

You will act as a resource for clinical expertise and support the professional development of midwives, midwifery support workers, heath care assistances and other members of the multi-disciplinary team as appropriate. This role will focus on providing practice-based education and support in intrapartum environments.

Main duties of the job

Actively support the development of an effective practice learning and development environment within the Maternity Service and across the Directorate.

Support the professional and personal development of staff within the Maternity service to improve the quality of patient care.

Provide role modelling, clinical supervision, coaching and mentoring for colleagues ensuring that all facilitation is subjected to reflection and evaluation processes.

Contribute to an environment in which individuals take ownership for their own development.

Co-ordinate and complete agreed mandatory training records as required to achieve trust targets. Supporting the maternity practice-based educator in maintaining the relevant training databases.

Job description

Job responsibilities

1. Undertake appraisals of allocated staff ensuring all reviews are completed meeting the current Trust required standard.

2. Work proactively in the clinical area to support the delivery of high-quality patient care supporting the application of theory into practice.

3. Work along Band 5 midwife colleagues to provide direct support supervision and guidance in the clinical area and promoting current evidence-based practice.

4. Act as a change agent in the clinical environment using persuasive, motivational and negotiating skills to bring about change and practice.

5. Acts as a role model at all times and provides midwifery expertise and specialist knowledge within the area of practice.

6. Assist in the development and implementation of the preceptorship programme, supporting colleagues to achieve the skills and knowledge necessary to complete it.

7. Act as a link between Higher Education Institutes.

8. Support the learning experience of pre-registration student midwives acting as a practice assessor where appropriate.

8. Support mentors in their role of coaching and assessing ensuring they are regularly updated. Maintaining up to date records of this.

9. Ensure all staff have received an effective induction in accordance with current Trust Policies.

10. Participate in all relevant areas of staff training and development required to promote the quality of care provided by the Maternity service.
