The custom built, Central Service Laboratory serves the North East Sector Trust site(s) at The Royal Oldham Hospital and there are similarly equipped laboratories across the NCA. The department is in the process of implementing a new laboratory information management system and is currently installing replacement Sysmex XN haematology analysers and Sysmex CN coagulation analysers within the department and across Haematology NCA.

This is a challenging post and offers an aspiring Specialist Biomedical Scientist or existing Advanced Biomedical Scientist an opportunity to take on a demanding role in both the technical and regulatory aspects of haematology laboratory practice.

The philosophy of the laboratory is to promote best practice and provide high quality services. The department is ISO 15189;2012 accredited and is approved by the HCPC/IBMS for training to state registration. CPD and further study is encouraged and supported.

Main duties of the job

We are in an exciting time of development and change, following the formation of the Northern Care Alliance. You will help to ensure that service delivery, specifically across the Haematology and Transfusion departments continue to be quality driven and ensure care is of the high standard that we would expect for our patients. The Haematology and Blood Transfusion department has a proven and well established quality management system.

You will be qualified to MSc (FIBMS) or equivalent in haematology or blood transfusion. You will have an in-depth knowledge of haematology laboratory practice, ideally with a minimum of five years laboratory experience at Specialist BMS grade and have the ability to manage a section of the haematology laboratories or ESL on a day to day basis supported by Specialist, Biomedical Scientist and Biomedical Support staff. You will be committed to patient safety, improving and maintaining quality. This will involve responsibility for audit and training within that section.
