Job summary
The postholder will have the opportunity to gain clinical training experience in metabolic medicine, which will be agreed on appointment. This will include experience in inpatient care and outpatient clinic work, with the possibility of clinical care in the outreach care organisations.
The post will provide and gain experience in general metabolic and LSD clinics. Multidisciplinary/ joint clinics include dietetics, cardiology, bone, neurology, neuromuscular, reproductive endocrinology, renal and others.
Main duties of the job
The appointee will join a team consisting of Metabolic Medicine Consultants, a clinical fellow/ specialist registrar working within the wider multidisciplinary service of an advanced practitioner, specialist dietitians, nurses, pharmacy, physiotherapy and research staff. The team is supported managerially by a support manager, lead manager, senior service manager and clinical director. The nature of the work will include assessment, and provision of a range of clinical treatments and care covering the spectrum of Inherited Metabolic Disorders.
There is team-based assessment of patients effected by IMD ranging from
acute presenting disorders to slowly progressive disorders. The postholder will gain experience in dietary management and pharmacotherapy (including enzyme replacement therapy, chaperone therapies, substrate reduction therapies and gene therapies), with exposure to diagnostic and monitoring biochemical techniques, genetic counselling, physiotherapeutic and the psychosocial needs of these patients.
The teams enjoy close working relationships with other departments within the Trust and in Greater Manchester. The appointee will develop relations and work with these teams including the disabilities team, neurology, cardiology, endocrinology, orthopaedics, ophthalmology and anaesthetics to name but a few. An out of hours advisory service is provided by the Metabolic team in liaison with the local admitting/ medical assessment team.
