Job summary

We are looking for an experienced and motivated Band 7 Nurse (SCPHN) to join us as a Specialist Nurse for Looked After Children (LAC).

As Specialist Nurse for Looked After Children, you will work with the Named Nurse, Safeguarding Team and the wider childrens community health teams to share best practice and delivery of an evidence-based service. The role will incorporate delivery of high-quality health services, including statutory health assessments. The post holder will be responsible for the management of a defined caseload of Looked After Children.

Main duties of the job

As a Specialist Nurse for LAC, you will:

  • Assess, plan and evaluate the health needs of looked after children on your caseload, challenging and escalating concerns where needed to ensure that the needs of the child are paramount.
  • You will undertake assessments, taking into account emotional, mental, physical and sexual health, ethnic and cultural needs designed to improve the health outcomes for this vulnerable group of children and young people
  • Provide direct clinical services to Looked After Children, to ensure that where possible every child has an individual and holistic health care plan

  • Registered on Part 1 of the NMC Adult Nurse or Children's Nurse or Midwife
  • Have completed specific training in the care of babies / children and young people.
  • Have completed a post registration training in LAC/ safeguarding children including Law, Policy and Practice at post graduate level.
  • Have substantial safeguarding children experience at Band 6 or above with children at Child in need, child protection plans and Children Looked After
  • Minimum of 3 years' experience related to caring for babies / children / young people and have an understanding of family court process and forensic matters.
  • Experience of participating in undertaking and providing clinical and safeguarding supervision.
  • Experience of participating and undertaking audits
  • Expertise in child health development and maltreatment. Including the impact of ACE's, trauma informed practice and the importance of the voice of children
  • Expert working knowledge of key legislation and policy relating to Looked After Children.
  • Excellent leadership skills.
