Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital

Consultant in Obstetric Anaesthesia

The closing date is 30 September 2025

Job summary

Applications are invited for a full-time substantive post for a consultant in anaesthesia with a special interest in Obstetric Anaesthesia. The successful applicant would join a team of 12 obstetric subspecialty anaesthetists who undertake a mix of obstetric and adult practice and currently 10 contribute to the on-call rota.

The James Paget University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, The Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and The Queen Elizabeth Hospital King's Lynn NHS Foundation Trust are now working in partnership as the Norfolk and Waveney University Hospitals Group.

All future senior medical and dental appointments will be expected to work in collaboration across the Group and, irrespective of initial job description and job plan, be willing to work on more than one hospital site, dependent on service needs. Service location may change as our future models of care are developed by our clinically led networks through our acute clinical strategy. Some of the clinical procedures or services the appointee will be expected to deliver may be based at sites other than their primary site of employment.

Main duties of the job

The appointee will take his/her share of clinical responsibilities within the Department of anaesthesia. This will include provision for peri-operative assessment.

In addition to duties within sub-specialty, the appointee will be required to provide anaesthesia for adult patients in all specialties as appropriate to his/her training and experience.

There is an on-call commitment of approximately 1:10. This provides an obstetric anaesthetic service for out-of-hours urgent and emergency cases.

All consultants, including the appointee, will be expected to be involved in implementing the Trust's Clinical Governance programme. This includes active participation in clinical audit, quality, clinical guidelines/pathways, professional development, appraisal and risk management.

The appointee will be a member of the Consultant Staff Committee.

The appointment is to the Trust, not to specific hospitals.
