Job summary

Opportunities have arisen within the CT and MRI Radiology Department at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (NNUH) for Band 3 Radiology Department Assistants. This role will support the CT and MRI service within the current hospital site at the Norfolk & Norwich Hospital, Cromer District Hospital and the Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC).

The Radiology department is within the Diagnostic and Clinical Support Services division and provides diagnostic imaging and therapeutic treatments across a range of specialties across the Trust.

The CT and MRI department provides a 7 day service which are busy, dynamic places to work, serving many specialties within the hospital and within the wider community.

Hours of work: Participation in the 7-day service. Full time/ Part time, Bank holidays and Night shifts. 12.5 hour shifts primarily.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be flexible and have excellent communication skills, speaking with patients, colleagues and team members, and the wider multi-professional team within the Hospital Trust.

This role involves assisting with all aspects of CT and MRI Imaging including preparing patients for examinations, helping to position patients for examinations, supporting all staff participating in the delivery of a safe compassionate healthcare service. Within CT, the post holder will assist with interventional procedures biopsies and drainages as required and will be trained to perform intravenous cannulation on patients prior to their radiological examination. The role will also involve gaining knowledge of MRI safety in order to support the Radiographer team proficiently.

The role is primarily patient focused so good communication is essential to assist patients and to demonstrate care and empathy to those who are unwell or distressed, helping them through the Imaging process.

You will contribute to the provision of a high standard of care for patients and carry out some duties unaided, in accordance with Trust/Directorate policies, at the discretion of qualified staff.

  • Undertake the Trust MRI Induction and Training programme and maintain an agreed level of competence.
  • Demonstrate competency, and complete assessments to become an MRI Authorised Personnel.
  • To utilise own initiative as appropriate, and as part of the wider clinical team.

MRI Specific responsibilities:

  • Complete MRI Safety lecture annually.
  • Comply with MRI working practices, read and adhere to the MRI 1.5T & 3T Local Rules.
  • Ability to respond appropriately in clinical emergencies with recognition of role and responsibility in emergency situations, ensuring compliance with MRI cardiac arrest and fire procedures.
  • In conjunction with Radiographers, complete daily cleaning checks and fridge checks for all MR areas.

Patient care responsibilities

  • Preparation and changing of patients in accordance to their examination.
  • Chaperone patients to and from the MR environment, control areas and escort to other departments when necessary.
  • To assist patients within the scan room prior to, during and after their scans.
