Job summary
Posts are available in the Histopathology Department. This presents an exciting opportunity to be part of an excellent team working in a busy modern teaching hospital laboratory. The department has a workload of around 61 000 surgical requests per year and covers a wide range of routine and specialised services to enable a diagnosis to be identified.
The department is due to get an equipment upgrade, along with implementing a fully digital reporting service. This will include increasing our workload and workforce.
Main duties of the job
- The main duties of the post will include sorting, labelling and processing of patient specimens from operating theatres, wards, clinics, post mortem room, and G.P surgeries.
- The post holder will also be required to enter patient data on the Pathology computer system, to assist at specimen dissection, participate in technical roles, including routine section cutting and tissue embedding.
- Make up solutions, file and retrieve archive material, carry out daily equipment maintenance and cleaning tasks.
- Assisting with the digital scanning service.

Job responsibilities
1. To work in specimen reception and cut-up, the main laboratory, immunohistochemistry and digital scanning areas on rotation.
2. To use the laboratory information management systems (LIMS) and other Trust IT platforms
3. To regularly make up and replace hazardous and toxic chemicals as required. Lifting of chemical containers up to 10l for storage and disposal is also required on a daily basis.
4. To assist in solving day-to-day problems, including incorrectly labelled specimens and follow appropriate quality and error logging procedures in the event of an incident.
5. To receive and check specimens of human organs and tissue specimens with the request forms and to ensure correct patient ID on both matching request forms and specimen pots. To give specimens and forms a unique laboratory number and transfer patient information to the LIMS.
