An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and highly motivated apprentice to join the Anaesthetic Department.
We are very proud of our Apprentice success rates, with 92% of Apprentices successfully obtaining a substantive post within the Trust at the end of their Apprenticeship contract, and 98% of Apprentices having further plans in place following their Apprenticeship e.g. going on to further education, joining the NNUH staff bank or obtaining employment at another organisation.
Apprenticeship Eligibility Criteria:
All applicants must be:
- Aged 16+
- Resident in the UK/EEA for the last three consecutive years
- Must not have a qualification in a similar subject at the same level or above
- Must not be in any form of formal government-funded education upon the start of their apprenticeship
Qualifications and Skills Required:
- Good general standard of education
- 4 GCSE's at Grade D/3 or above (or equivalent) subject to the job specification
- Good standard of literacy and numeracy
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
- Good IT skills
Full time: 37.5 hours per week
Main duties of the job
To provide administrative services and support the efficient running of the Anaesthetic Department office including:
- act as first point of contact between consultants and patients
- to provide an effective secretarial service to the consultant anaesthetists.
- arrange pre-operative anaesthetic assessments for patients.
- arrange and support Clinical Governance meetings
An anaesthetists main role is to provide anaesthesia during surgery and the Norfolk & Norwich Hospital has one of the largest departments in the UK with around 100 anaesthetists. Anaesthetists cover a wide aspect of patient care including critical care, day case surgery, obstetrics, pain and paediatrics.
The Anaesthetic Admin team work in a busy office environment and a full admin team is essential to keep on top of the work. Job responsibilities
- To organise and support the management of the pre-operative anaesthetic assessment clinics including patient correspondence and retrieving patients notes
- Deal efficiently and effectively with direct and indirect (i.e. telephone, face to face) enquiries from patients, all levels of medical and nursing staff, GPs, Social Services and other health professionals and staff. Respond to enquiries, providing routine and non-routine information and non-clinical advice, resolving problems where possible. Communicate appropriately with patients who may be fearful, aggressive or have sensitive concerns needing reassurance and who may present difficulties in communication e.g. terminally ill patients, deaf patients, mentally ill patients and elderly confused patients.
- Arranging translation/interpretation facilities via INTRAN.
- Attend to all communications, for example, emails, investigation results on a daily basis.
- Generate routine and non-routine correspondence independently.
- Dispatch reports and notes to other departments.
- Organise and support the management of the pre-operative assessment clinics including patient correspondence and retrieving patient notes.
- Maintain and update the Patient Administrative System (PAS) recording all new referrals in accordance with Trust policy.
- Exchange sensitive and confidential information with staff, patients, carers etc which required persuasive skills where agreement and co-operation is required.
- Frequent bending, lifting and transportation of heavy, bulky case notes (average weight of clinic notes handled is 17 kilo, excluding the weight of the trolley) throughout the day.
