We are very proud of our Apprentice success rates, with 92% of Apprentices successfully obtaining a substantive post within the Trust at the end of their Apprenticeship contract, and 98% of Apprentices having further plans in place following their Apprenticeship e.g. going on to further education, joining the NNUH staff bank or obtaining employment at another organisation.

Older Peoples medicine (OPM) is a specialty that has evolved in recent years to meet the needs of the growing population of people over the age of 80 years old.We are the largest directorate within the trust with 5 inpatient wards, and our outpatient services. Each ward has a unique specialist focus within the specialism.

Apprenticeship Eligibility Criteria:

All applicants must be:

  • Aged 16+
  • Resident in the UK/EEA for the last three consecutive years
  • Must not have a qualification in a similar subject at the same level or above
  • Must not be in any form of formal government-funded education upon the start of their apprenticeship

Qualifications and Skills Required:

  • Good general standard of education
  • 4 GCSE's at Grade D/3 or above (or equivalent) subject to the job specification
  • Good standard of literacy and numeracy
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Good IT skills

Full time: 37.5 hours per week

Main duties of the job

Dunston Ward and Brundall are acute OPM wards, caring for patients with complex cognitive impairment/delirium and or with complex care needs. Earsham is an ortho/medical ward caring for patient requiring surgery for fracture Neck of Femurs. Loddon specializes in short stay patients, that are able to return home usually within 3-5 days. Elsing is a specialized Dementia unit the staff and environment are adapted to meet the complex needs of Patients living with dementia.

The wards have 37/8 beds, they are spilt into teams to care for the patients. Each team will consist of registered andunregistered members of staff. On the ward we have apprentice health care assistants, international nurses, bankstaff, new staff members to health care and student nurses, The wards provide high standards of care/ support topatients and their families approaching at the end of their lives. This care is supported by our dementia palliativecare specialist nurse.

As wards we try to reduce patient's deconditioning in hospital which is supported by trained exercise professionals. In OPM we like to focus on celebrating occasions within the ward environments and we like to involve relatives and patients where possible. We are currently have a specialist Dementia Garden going through the planning stage which will provide a safe outside interactive space for the benefit of our patients, their families and staff.

About us

You will be supported in post clinically by your line manager and by an assigned mentor within the department, as well as our dedicated Clinical Educator and Practice Development team. With regards to the qualification, you will also have an assigned assessor at City College Norwich and regular mentoring from a Career Facilitator from the Trust's Apprenticeship Team. The role will involve attendance at college two days a month - one day online and one day in college at City College Norwich (Ipswich Road campus).

  • To deliver care and carry out duties as specified within the Trusts Approved core task list for Healthcare assistants.
  • To report to RN any patient who gives cause for concern or any observed changes in the patients condition.
  • To respond appropriately to clinical emergencies to ensure the patient receives appropriate care.
  • To participate in the admission process under the supervision of RN.
  • Provide and deliver a high standard of individualised personal nursing care.
  • To report all care that has been given to patients within the team to a RN.
  • To accurately document all care delivered to patients, countersigned by a RN maintaining confidentiality at all times.
  • To assist in the preparation of patients and equipment for treatment, investigations or procedures as directed by the RN.
  • To keep the clinical area clean and tidy maintaining a safe environment.
