Job summary

This advertisement is for a new post within the department of Hepatology and Gastroenterology at the NNUH. The successful post holder will also hold an Associate Professor position within the Medical School.

We are looking to attract a high-quality Academic Hepatology Consultant with a subspecialist interest in autoimmune liver disease who wishes to establish them self as an academic clinician scientist.

This post has arisen due to the need to expand our academic staff in alignment with the NNUH Trusts executive research position led by Dr Bernard Brett and Professor Kristian Bowles and Professor Charles Ffrench-Constant.

This post has been uniquely created, to allow the post holder to develop themselves both as a clinical Hepatologist, whilst also offering 40% protected time within UEA Faculty of Medicine in an associated research institute.

This post is a fully funded NHS post with 60% clinical and 40% research time included in the job plan for the first 5 years. During this time the expected post holder will be expected to write and be awarded a national grant (NIHR/MRC/Welcome) and develop a clear research theme within the Norwich Research Park and facilitate academic Hepatology.

Main duties of the job

The clinical hepatology team currently is composed of 8 consultant Hepatologists

The hepatology team offer a wide range of specialist clinics dedicated to hepatobiliary cancer, viral hepatitis, PSC, autoimmune liver disease, alcohol and NAFLD. This is in addition to specialist liver transplantation clinics and a range of general liver clinics. They also provide specialist ERCP, Spyglass and Endoscopic Ultrasound services.

The team has excellent working relationships with the Cambridge liver unit and works closely with our colleagues there in the management of patient's pre and post liver transplantation. We are part of the regional HCV network providing DAA drugs to patients with HCV infection according to an operational managed network. We also provide an autoimmune liver disease MDT with our network partners.

The core team is supported by consultant colleagues in Interventional Radiology (IRU), Clinical Biochemistry, Microbiology/virology, histopathology and hepatobiliary radiology (led by Dr Benedict Simpson).

Our IRU team offer: a mobile PICC Line service, Percutaneous biliary stent placement, a range of embolization procedures, transjugular liver biopsies, TIPS and perform Trans-arterial chemoembolization and microwave radiofrequency ablation of hepatocellular carcinoma cases.

The hepatology unit also run a number of fibro scan clinics and are able to offer MRE for liver fibrosis assessment and quantitative liver iron measurements.

We provide a wide range of consultant-led outpatient services, day case operations and a Minor Injuries Unit (MIU). The trust is commemorating 150 years of a hospital in Cromer in 2017/18.
