Job summary

The Queen Elizabeth Hospital Blood Science Spoke Laboratory provides a repertoire of tests for the immediate management of the patient. The Laboratory is part of The Eastern Pathology Alliance, a Network comprising the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital that hosts the Hub laboratory, the James Paget Hospital GT. Yarmouth and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Kings Lynn, the latter host the spoke laboratories.

This position will be based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Blood Science Spoke Laboratory. The successful candidate will ideally be multidisciplinary trained in Haematology, Blood Transfusion and Biochemistry but in depth training will be given to the successful candidate as required.

Main duties of the job

The Eastern Pathology Alliance have an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated, enthusiastic state registered Biomedical Scientist to join our friendly Multidisciplinary Blood Science Spoke Laboratory at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Kings Lynn. The successful candidate will ideally be multidisciplinary trained in Haematology, Blood Transfusion and Biochemistry but in depth training will be given to the successful candidate as required.

The Laboratory is equipped with Abbott Anility Haematology and Chemistry analysers, Werfen TOPS coagulation and Grifols Blood Grouping analysers. In addition, there are a number of standalone analysers for Osmolality, Blood Gas and CSF Xanthochromia

You will be required to perform a range of analyses in a section in either Clinical Biochemistry or Haematology and ideally have experience of Transfusion and Coagulation.

Knowledge of laboratory based computers, audits, SOPs, ISO standards and quality is essential. You must also be able to demonstrate current evidence of CPD. Essential qualities we require are an ability to work within a team, good communication skills, good technical proficiency and an ability to work unsupervised. You must be able to work under pressure and be able to meet deadlines, be flexible and adaptable and show that you are motivated and willing to develop your knowledge and skill.

The individual would be trained to a high standard in a multidisciplinary setting.

  • Maintains as part of a team, complex specialist analytical equipment on a daily basis and assess fitness for clinical use referring to senior staff as appropriate.
  • Responsible for the efficient use of expensive tests and high value analysers.
  • Able to run daily test procedures on all methodologies to include calibration and quality control testing and refer to senior staff to sign off as fit for clinical use.
  • Fault find equipment and analyser function after formal in-house training.
  • Follows policies in specialised areas and propose changes that will improve and develop the service for users inside and outside the Trust.
