Job summary
EPA Microbiology is the only Microbiology laboratory in the county with working links to the East Coast Pathology Network (ECPN). We provide clinical diagnostic services to help doctors understand what is making their patients sick and how best to treat them.
This busy and essential service is run by an efficient and closely knit team, the laboratory is focused on staff wellbeing and teamwork. We would love to get someone recruited who will integrate well into this dynamic, with previous lab experience to help you hit the ground running and contribute to improving the Microbiology/Bacteriology service.
Staff will be expected to participate in the departmental rota. We work Monday to Friday on 3 shifts - early (8am-4pm) core (9am-5pm) and late (1pm-9pm), and on 8am-4pm on Saturdays and Sundays and Bank Holidays.
Main duties of the job
Performing routine laboratory procedures in all areas of the Bacteriology Laboratory according to laboratory policies and Standard Operating Procedures under supervision of qualified Biomedical Scientist staff.
Working across all areas of the laboratory to prepare and process clinical material for testing, run automated analysers, participate in quality improvement and train other staff.
Complete ongoing service training including CPD
Work with other team members to plan workload and achieve collective goals

Job responsibilities
- To prepare and process all types of clinical material for microscopy and culture (except those processed at Containment Level 3).
- Labelling and preparing patients blood, urine and other fluids for analysis utilising aseptic techniques.
- To prepare samples for Mycology microscopy and culture.
- To prepare samples for testing and to assist the Biomedical Scientists.
- To process urine samples to include setting up bacterial cultures and sensitivities, data entry.
- To process genital swabs including the preparation of samples for microscopy.
- To assist in the setting up of microbial sensitivities.
- Daily maintenance of very complex specialist analytical equipment (including automated EIA and molecular analysers), including initiation of calibration and quality assurance programs referring to senior staff as appropriate.
- To perform Enzyme ImmunoAssays (EIA), Immunofluorescence (IF) and other serological assays according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) under supervision by BMS.
- To perform antibody/antigen investigations using advanced and complex molecular techniques with emphasis on accuracy, timing and contamination avoidance.
