Job summary

Locum Consultant Interventional Cardiologist

The Norfolk and Norwich University NHS Foundation Trust (NNUH) is seeking to appoint a locum Consultant Interventional Cardiologist to support the provision of interventional cardiology services to a large catchment population, including on-call for primary PCI. This is a fixed term appointment for an initial period of 6 months to cover a career break.

You will be joining seven existing interventional consultants. We have recently expanded to five cath labs and a programme of refurbishment is currently underway.

The appointee will be expected to contribute to the delivery of elective and emergency PCI services, including cardiology on-call at NNUH (1:8 primary PCI on call rota), triage ward rounds, and general cardiology clinics.

Main duties of the job

Interventional Cardiology

There are 8 interventional consultants providing elective and emergency PCI, with 23 sessions of PCI / angiography scheduled each week. We perform approximately 1700 coronary interventions p.a. of which approx. 500 are PPCI cases. The hospital is a designated Heart Attack Centre and has a 24/7 helicopter landing pad facilitating admission of patients with out of hospital cardiac arrest from across East Anglia.

We have a full range of diagnostic, interventional, adjunctive and supportive treatments available including iFR / FFR / CFR, IVUS, OCT, rotablation, Shockwave, intra-aortic balloon pumps, and CorPuls compression device. Most procedures are performed trans-radially, and more than 90% of elective PCI is undertaken as day-case. The department has considerable expertise in DCB angioplasty, and recently performed several live cases demonstrating this technique at the BCIS Advanced Cardiovascular Interventions meeting. Regular CTO lists are undertaken, often assisted by external proctors.

Rigorous governance around PCI includes weekly M+M meetings, attended by cath lab staff, trainees and consultants. There is a comprehensive database of PCI procedures and outcomes to support the BCIS / NICOR audit, which has proved invaluable for research projects, leading to numerous publications.

About us

We serve a population of approximately 1m, with an estimated 10,000 patients with heart failure. We are passionate about improving the care of patients with heart failure in collaboration with community partners. We are particularly interested in developing pathways to avoid heart failure admissions, reduce length of stay and work across traditional boundaries between the hospital and community.

NNUH is a 1,200 bedded multidisciplinary teaching hospital with the full range of medical, surgical, obstetric and diagnostic services on site including 24/7 interventional radiology and thoracic surgical cover. The cardiology department includes 24 consultants with specialist interests including coronary disease and intervention, cardiac rhythm management, cardiac imaging, valve disease, heart failure and inherited cardiac conditions (ICC). Four academic consultants have joint appointments with the University of East Anglia Medical School
