The Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital is a modern forward thinking teaching hospital offering acute care to a population of approximately one million. Main duties of the job
We are looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated pharmacist to join our Medicines Information team to contribute to delivering and developing our high quality, patient focused service.
We have an opportunity for you to join our established Medicines Information team. This is a senior practitioner post, you would be expected to work using your own initiative within local guidelines and to national standards answering enquiries from healthcare professionals within the Trust, patients and members of the public.
You will be given the opportunity to attend the National Medicines Information Training Course if you have not already completed this.
The post will also incorporate an element of clinical ward work to a defined clinical area.
Our department supports staff development and you will be given the opportunity to further develop your leadership and management skills. As a senior clinical pharmacist, you will be expected to support education and training of more junior staff including foundation and newly qualified rotational pharmacists.

- To participate in and assist in the provision of MI services to the Trust in liaison with the Principal Pharmacist, MI.
- To act as a specialist pharmacist providing an advanced level MI service to the Trust. To independently answer complex and highly specialised queries from healthcare professionals and patients, including the analysis of highly complex and conflicting/contradictory data, in response to both routine and urgent/emergency enquiries without supervision to ensure safe, clinically effective and cost-efficient use in order to optimise patient care.
- To initiate, actively implement and maintain service developments in MI; eg, real time entry of queries into a national electronic database (MiDatabank).
- To undertake regular quality assurance of MI queries answered to ensure that they meet the standards defined by UKMi. This includes ensuring that the work is completed appropriately, to a high standard, using professional judgement and expertise, to agreed timescales. To follow up any enquiries which do not meet set standards and to rectify errors. To counsel MI staff involved and to help them identify training needs.
- To maintain and update in-house database of MI. To research and obtain new relevant information and delete obsolete information.
- To participate in the day-to-day operation of the clinical pharmacist check scheme in the Dispensary.
- To undertake the regular inspection of drug storage facilities on wards anddepartments, including controlled drugs (CDs), and advise nursing and medical staff on the legal control, safe custody and security of drugs.
- To ensure that all provisions of the current law relating to pharmacy and medicines are complied with both within the Pharmacy Department and on the wards/ departments.
- To co-operate in the development and operation of the Trusts drug formulary.
- To participate in the drug recall system in consultation with the Principal Pharmacist, Operations Manager and Deputy Operations Manager, Support Services.
- To operate the computerised systems for recalling and processing clinical pharmacy data including patient medication profiles, pharmacokinetic programmes and clinical pharmacy intervention monitoring as available.
