Job summary
**Fixed term contract/secondment opportunity for 12 months **
The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is a major regional centre operating within the East of England Neonatal Network. It undertakes the full range of neonatal intensive care, including neonatal surgery. The surgical workload includes a wide range of neonatal surgical abnormalities including those which may lead to long term nutritional or feeding problems that require specialist gastroenterology input. A regional retrieval service is offered for transport of neonates requiring intensive care.
The Physicians Associate Role is a new position for NICU. The successful candidate will have full training in all aspects of Neonatal Care, including but not limited to newborn resuscitation, undertaking relevant procedures and training for Neonatal and Infant Physical Examination (NIPE). This exciting new post will develop according to the individual needs and experience of the successful candidate.

Main duties of the job
To provide expert assistance to the Neonatal Team in the provision of a high quality, patient centred service. The post holders are expected to participate in all aspects of the patient care as appropriate and will be expected to perform delegated duties with a high degree of clinical skill and knowledge. The role is generally developed flexibly over time in accordance with the appointee's clinical interests and in line with the needs of the service.

Job responsibilities
- Assess, investigate and treat patients within the scope of practice associated with the role within the Neonatal Unit, Delivery Suite and Postnatal Ward.
- Provide direct clinical care, using established clinical guidelines and consultant and registrar input.
- Contribute to achieving and maintaining regulatory compliance with KPIs and performance metrics within the specialty.
- Manage a caseload of patients as directed.
- Perform physical examinations, order appropriate investigation, interpret finding and formulate a list of differential diagnosis, with consultant oversight and approval.
- Interpret and utilise data and clinical findings to proactively develop treatment plans.
- Make person centred, evidence based plans in partnership with others involved in the care process.
- Escalate and seek support appropriately.
- Initiate, review and deliver treatment plans within the framework of agreed policies / protocols / guidelines.
- Using highly developed communication skills, share complex information effectively to patients and their loved ones, recognising and overcoming different levels of understanding and methods of communicating.
- Communicate effectively with all members of the multi-disciplinary team.
- Maintain accurate clinical records for patients, ensuring accuracy, timeliness and adherence to agreed professional standards for written and electronic record keeping.
- Achieve and maintain a range of core and specialty clinical skills and competence specific to the post and specialty.
