Job summary
The Post Anaesthetic Care Unit (PACU) Team at the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital are recruiting band 5 Registered staff (Staff Nurses / ODPs) to join their busy team.
PACU is placed in the Main Theatre Suite (of 17 theatres) and has 24 bays (including 4 paediatric). We support activity in the Day Procedure Unit, two Obstetric Theatres, MRI / CT (for patients having had general anaesthesia) and the Brachytherapy Suite. Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team (nurse, ODPs, HCAs, TSWs, medical staff) you will care for adults and children in the immediate post-anaesthetic / surgical phase.
The ability to communicate in a personable, approachable and respectful manner to individuals from inside and outside the organisation is essential to building the relationships needed to promote safe working practices - 'Human Factors' training has been introduced throughout the Trust as a mandatory requirement, to enhance our clinical performance through understanding the effects of teamwork.
We provide a supportive orientation programme - all trainees work in a supernumerary capacity alongside an assigned mentor until assessed as being competent to work independently. In-service training (study days) covering Recovery practices are already available and exciting opportunities such as simulation training are forthcoming.
Main duties of the job
You will provide a professionally competent service to patients in a safe clinical environment. You will be expected to: undertake the post-anaesthetic and post-operative management of adult and paediatric patients, using his/her initiative to assess, plan and implement care interventions, to include
- Assume autonomous responsibility of patients care once a handover from the anaesthetist and the surgical team has been given.
- Work in collaboration with the appropriate anaesthetists, relevant consultants and their multi-disciplinary care teams.
- Demonstrate by skills and knowledge the care of the unconscious patient with particular reference to basic and advanced airway management.
- Provide continual observation and monitoring of physiological parameters using non-invasive and invasive techniques.
- Provide extended care for patients post-operatively who have a high dependency status, requiring stabilisation before transfer to the HDU/ICU.
and; assume responsibility for the recovery environment as required:
You will also co-ordinate the recovery satellite areas over a 24hr emergency period; involving support of staff, patients and relatives within critical and emergency situations
