Job summary

The Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital is a modern forward thinking teaching hospital offering acute care to a population of over 1 million. Electronic prescribing and medicines administration has been implemented across all inpatient wards, the Emergency Department and most recently as part of our response to COVID-19, for Outpatients. We have strong links with both the School of Pharmacy and the Medical School at the nearby University of East Anglia, with onsite teacher practitioner posts. The Trust has a clear commitment to patient centred care through investment in its services and staff.

The Pharmacy Department is at the forefront of healthcare delivery with a strong focus on Medicines Management and innovative pharmaceutical practice. It is challenging the current professional roles resulting in a number of innovative new pharmacy led developments and new posts, including pharmacists working within pre-op assessment and out-patient clinics and in our ED and admissions units.

This post is for full time employment.

To support 7 day working all staff are required to work 1 in 10 weekends with corresponding time off given during the week. All staff are required to undertake at least one bank holiday duty per year.

It is expected that band 6 pharmacists will participate in the on-call service which attracts additional pay.

Main duties of the job

We would welcome applications from both Trainee Pharmacists qualifying in August 2023 who have a satisfactory 26 week performance review and those with some experience at band 6 in hospital pharmacy looking to develop towards a band 7. Application from GP practice-based pharmacist looking to change sectors is also welcomed. Progression to band 7 will be based on completion of pre-defined competencies.

You will join a team of rotational pharmacists working across all aspects of hospital pharmacy with opportunities to gain experience in a wide range of clinical specialities including admissions/emergency department, cardiology, orthopaedics, critical care, respiratory and cystic fibrosis, paediatrics, oncology/haematology, medicines information, clinical trials and preparative services. Our structured training programme will be tailored to you and your level of experience. You will have support and regular feedback from our team of experienced senior pharmacists during all rotations and will have the opportunity to undertake a post graduate pharmacy diploma. You will be supported to achieve the competencies defined for the band 7 specialist pharmacist role and once achieved will automatically progress.

Applicants will be self-motivated, able to work independently and be capable of working under pressure. The successful candidates must have excellent communication skills and be willing to learn.
