Job summary

We have a fantastic opportunity for an Occupational Therapist with specialist experience within Respiratory Medicine to join our well established Respiratory/Cardiology/Oncology team ('Ologies' team). The post is for up to 30 hours per week.

The post will be based on the acute respiratory ward working our alongside both OT and MDT colleagues to implement and develop the role of Respiratory clinical specialist and providing specialist knowledge and education to our Respiratory patients.

Main duties of the job

We are looking to recruit an Occupational Therapist who is a dynamic, forward looking individual who would love the challenge of helping us implement clinical and strategic developments that will help us deliver what is most important to us - the highest quality patient care. Supporting service redesign will also be part of the role. We would also consider a progression post from a band 6 to a band 7 for the right candidate.

We are looking for someone with excellent communication skills who will be able to demonstrate sound experience of working in a clinical occupational therapy role, ideally with respiratory patients, either in an acute or community setting. Although we are looking for someone with strong experience of working in a clinical occupational therapy role within Respiratory medicine, we are happy to consider both those already working in this area and those looking to broaden their clinical repertoire from a related or relevant alternative field.

Job responsibilities

  • To be professionally and legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of own work.
  • To maintain a high standard of clinical care for patients.
  • To accept clinical responsibility for the Occupational Therapy management of a defined caseload of patients and to organise this efficiently and effectively with regard to clinical priorities and use of time.
  • To provide peer support and case review for other members of the team, in particular, in relation to patients with complex clinical/psychological presentations.
  • To use communication tools (verbal and non-verbal) and assess understanding of treatment proposals to gain valid informed consent. To work within a legal framework with patients who lack the capacity to consent to treatment.
  • To collect relevant patient information from a variety of sources e.g.radiology imaging systems, other investigations to assist with clinical prioritisation and patient management. This may also include ward handovers, observation charts, medical and nursing records etc.
  • To undertake the comprehensive specialist assessment of patients using investigative and highly analytical skills.
  • To make a clinical diagnosis based on presenting signs and symptoms.
  • To formulate an individual management and/or treatment programme using advanced clinical reasoning and a wide range of treatment skills and options relevant to clinical specialty.
  • To have an active role in the planning, development, coordination, delivery and evaluation of the Occupational Therapy/Integrated Therapy service within the relevant service/team.
  • To provide support to the Occupational Therapy Operational Lead/Integrated Therapy Lead/Service Lead in the daily operational management of the relevant service/team.
  • To delegate to, supervise and monitor senior Occupational Therapists, Occupational Therapists, students and support workers.
