Job summary

The Business Intelligence department are the custodians of all the data within the Trust which employs approx. 10,000 staff. The Department is comprised of a team of 25 Analysts and Developers whose focus is providing insights for decision makers all over the Trust. These insights are realised through the provision of information, research and analysis to customers using products such as SSRS and Power BI. At the very heart of everything is the data warehouse which runs smoothly to feed data to all our products.

Our service enables operational and clinical staff to provide the best patient care possible and aims to alleviate pressure where it matters most.

Full time: 37.5 hours per week

Main duties of the job

As the Senior BI Developer you will lead a team of BI developers and visualization experts and be responsible for the Trust's Data Warehouse environment. The role takes care of engaging with other technical experts, both internal and external, in order to maintain and further expand our repository of data. The role will also play a key part in the upcoming Electronic Patient Record program which will see all major patient systems consolidated into one providing improved data linkages and patient pathway mapping.

  • Fully documented on-prem Enterprise Data Warehouse with high availability.
  • Suite of PowerBI dashboards with fully automated data pipelines.
  • Access to Azure platform as part of the EPR project.

Job responsibilities

  • First and Second line management of a team of informaticians, allocating, prioritising and quality assuring their work. Take responsibility for their performance, training and development. Provide support, direction and leadership whilst dealing with own complex work.
  • Develop and maintain a high level of skills and abilities across the team. Regularly evaluate performance and development needs to ensure that development requirements are identified, performance issues are addressed and exceptional work is recognised and rewarded.
  • Produce and deliver comprehensive training material to develop and maintain a high level of skills and abilities across the team. Ensuring that technical BI skills are shared and developed. Teach, tutor and, coach, formally or informally as required to ensure effective use of the BI systems.
  • Take ownership of individual and team workloads, keeping people informed of progress and managing expectations where necessary, ensuring that all departmental routine and ad-hoc reporting is produced to meet the agreed deadlines.
  • Assist in the management of budgets allocated to the department and/or delegated budget for projects and on-going maintenance of systems. Assist in the development of business cases and negotiations with external companies.
  • Responsible for the support and maintenance and development of the data warehouse and BI infrastructure including the design and implementation of automated Data Extract, Transformation and Load processes to meet new and changing requirements.
  • Responsible for the oversight and quality assurance of visual BI reporting produced by the informatics department. This includes ensuring that the requirements are identified and met and that the report design meets agreed standards.
  • Develop, Interpret and implement policies and procedures, providing guidance from an information management perspective.
  • Based on customer consultation design functional specifications for development work. Using creative and problem solving skills, support the changing information requirements of the trust through the design, development, creation and deployment of data warehouse tables and other BI developments.
  • Work with the wider informatics team in the documenting workflow and designing specification and assisting in the development of new BI solutions including, but is not limited to, new data warehouse tables/views, Visualisations, R and Python development.+
