Job summary

The VTE clinic is part of the Trust Anticoagulation Service. It is a nurse led emergency admission avoidance service which assesses, investigates and treats patients with suspected deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

An exciting opportunity has come up for a full-time band 2 to join our friendly and dynamic team and become our new Anticoagulation Deputy Assistant. Full training will be given.

The post is a combination of HCA duties (approx.30%) and Admin/Clerical duties (approx.70%). The post holder will be the first person the patients will see on arrival to the clinic therefore representing the VTE service with all the PRIDE values.

The assistant post is an integral part of the VTE team as assists in the running of reception, assisting the nurse specialists and direct patient contact in the waiting area and clinic rooms. The post holder will need excellent computer skills, communication skills, be friendly, good sense of humour and be able to work alone and as part of a team.

The VTE Clinic is currently a Monday to Friday service as dependent on radiology scanning however now scanning on Saturdays. Candidate may be required to cover Saturday instead of a weekday. To work closely with other Anticoagulation Assistant.

Main duties of the job

To work with the Anticoagulation Assistant, Anticoagulation Nurse Specialists, Anticoagulation Pharmacist and other Anticoagulation Assistant within a multi-professional framework and provide a high standard of care for patients, whilst supporting and helping all members of the team in an outpatient environment.

The post holder will be expected to provide an efficient and reliable service and carry out some duties unaided at the discretion of the Nurse Specialists. The job will involve both clinical and reception duties.

Job responsibilities

  • Assist in welcoming patients and their carers to the department.
  • Participate in the assessment of patients under the supervision of the Anticoagulation Nurse Specialists.
  • To collect routine specimens (bloods), correctly label and dispatch promptly for investigations.
  • To take and record observations of temperature, pulse and respiration and to routinely monitor and record blood pressure (following completion of the Trusts recognised training and assessment package). To document recordings accurately on to the patient assessment documentation.
  • To promptly report abnormal readings to the Anticoagulation Nurse Specialists.
  • To support the Anticoagulation Nurse Specialists over the discharge of patients from the department, including transfer of patients and their property, the collection of TTOs and the transfer of medical notes as appropriate.
  • Assist the team with the running of the clinics e.g. preparing patients for examination, assisting patients to undress and dress, and chaperoning the patient/Doctor as required.
  • Liaise with other departments (i.e. Radiology, Pharmacy, X-Ray, Laboratory, Acute Medical Unit).
  • To ensure that long stay patients are provided with suitable refreshments.
  • To provide patient comfort, including assisting patients to the toilet.
