Consultant Haematologist (10 PA)
We are looking for a colleague to join our forward-thinking and expanding Haematology Department. This is a new post and we want to recruit a colleague with a specialist interest in malignant haematology - within that remit the successful applicant's disease specific interests will be accommodated. You will be part of a team of 9 consultants, 4 rotational specialty registrars, 1 academic clinical fellow, 3 foundation year and IMT doctors and 8 clinical nurse specialists.
Main duties of the job
Inpatient care is on a dedicated 34 bed haematology and oncology inpatient area, which includes 10 isolation rooms. Day cases are managed in a day ward within the Colney Centre. Procedures such as bone marrow sampling, lumbar punctures, red cell exchanges and cell separation are also carried out in this facility. A new mobile chemotherapy unit service launched in 2021 with space for four recliner chairs and infusion pumps
The Department fulfils requirements for a BCSH level 3 provision of Haematological care. Autologous peripheral blood stem cell transplants are carried out locally (priming, leucopheresis, conditioning and post-transplant care).
There are 2 weekly combined MDT meetings held with radiology, the regional haemato-oncology diagnostic service (based in Cambridge) and James Paget University Hospital. The department is a TYA designated centre, venous thrombo-embolism exemplar site, ITP exemplar site and forms part of the East of England haemoglobinopathy network.
All Haematology consultants have admitting rights to a dedicated ward for haematology and oncology patients on average there are 15-20 Haematology inpatients at any one time. The Department prefers to manage patients as outpatients where possible, with established ambulatory care practices and a virtual ward in place.
Each consultant has at least 2 specialist clinics per week. Many patients are managed by virtual appointments with clinic rooms equipped to support telephone and video consultations.
About us
We provide Level 3 Haematology care and all stages of autologous stem cell transplantation by a JACIE accredited service. A high specification Radiotherapy treatment suite is on site. The hospital is a dedicated TYA centre and Haemophilia centre. Our department provides undergraduate teaching at the Norwich Medical School in both clinical and laboratory haematology, as well as having active clinical trials and basic scientific research programmes. Laboratory haematology is part of a managed pathology network across Norfolk and parts of Suffolk (Eastern Pathology Alliance). The Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (NNUH) is the 'hub' laboratory and provides all community pathology for the network. The NNUH laboratory is UKAS accredited.
