Job summary

20 month Fixed Term Contract - Apprenticeship

We welcome applications from individuals wishing to become an Apprentice and gain experience in the NHS. You will develop new skills and knowledge whilst working with an established team gaining valuable work experience and a recognised apprenticeship qualification.

You will be enrolled with a local education provider and will be required to complete your Level 3 Library, Information and Archive Services Assistant Apprenticeship Standard qualification within the duration of the placement.

We have an exciting opportunity for an apprentice to join the Sir Thomas Browne Library Team.

The Sir Thomas Library is a busy and interesting work environment based in Centre Block Level 1, Norfolk and Norwich Hospital. The Library team provides a high quality, comprehensive and efficient Library and information service to NHS staff and students.

You will work as part of a team and respect and integrity are an essential part of the ethos of working together that drives our department. This is a customer-focused role with varying demands, so building an effective rapport with colleagues and being ready to take their guidance and offer your support will be really important.

Main duties of the job

This role will involve a variety of customer-focused activities such as staffing the main enquiry desk, issuing and returning books, looking after Library stock and general Library administrative tasks. You will be a first point of contact for a range of customer enquiries (with support from the team) and will also participate in marketing and promotion of Library services through events, displays and social media.

Eligibility Criteria

All applicants must be:

  • Aged 16+
  • Resident in the UK/EEA for the last three consecutive years
  • Must not have a qualification in a similar subject at the same level or above
  • Must not be in any form of formal government-funded education upon the start of their apprenticeship

Qualifications and Skills Required:

  • Good general standard of education
  • 4 GCSE's at Grade D/3 or above (or equivalent)
  • Good standard of literacy and numeracy
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Good IT skills

Full time: 37.5 hours per week

  • To assist with the provision of an approachable and professional Library reception desk in partnership with other members of the Library team.
  • To provide an enquiry service to all Library users, in person, via telephone, email or social media, and referring more complex enquiries to other team members as appropriate.
  • To offer initial guidance and assistance to Library users with computers, printers, e-learning and software packages referring enquiries on to others when appropriate.
  • To issue, return, and reserve Library resources using a computerised system.
  • To maintain the book and journal stock; this includes shelving and shelf-tidying, processing new books and withdrawing items which are no longer required.
  • To open and close the Library, following agreed procedures. Assist in the maintenance of a clean, safe and secure Library environment.
  • Process interlibrary loan requests for books and journals, ensuring an efficient document delivery service at regional and national level. Scanning and emailing requests for other libraries and users.
  • To register new Library members using the computerised system, providing appropriate induction information and to assist with the maintenance of users contact details in accordance with data protection regulations.
  • To assist with maintaining records of cash received and charges due from departments and handle small sums of money securely.
  • To understand and abide by relevant legislation such as Copyright, Data Protection and Information Governance.
