About us
The Jenny Lind Children's Hospital maintains a unique identity within the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital. It comprises an in-patient ward (Buxton), a Day Ward, an ambulatory area including the Children's Assessment Unit, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Out-patient Department and Physiotherapy Department and the departmental offices.
Registrars work in all these areas and gain experience in both medical and surgical paediatrics. There are daily consultant medical ward rounds (including weekends) with a consultant and ST4+ dedicated to the Jenny Lind. There is a tertiary neonatal unit at NNUH which has separate staffing and Tier1, Tier 2 and consultant levels and this post does not include neonatal cover. The surgical children are under the care of the consultant paediatric surgeons and other subspecialty surgeons but all have a Paediatric overview. There are close working arrangements with the Community Paediatric team who provide specialist advise and support for safeguarding issues and children with complex needs.
There are good levels of staffing within paediatric medicine with Tier 1 and Tier cover 24 hours a day. Between 0830 and 2200 there are usually 4 or 5 doctors at both Tier 1 and 2 level allowing for good team working and peer support. This is in addition to designated consultant support through a 'Consultant of the week' cover for the inpatient ward and additional consultant led sessions on CAU during peak activity.
