Job summary

The General Surgical Directorate is seeking a new full-time consultant oesophagogastric surgeon in response to increased volumes of work and plans to further develop clinical services. The successful applicant would join a team of Eighteen gastrointestinal surgeons.

Main duties of the job

There are currently 5 UGI consultants (Michael Lewis, Simon Wemyss-Holden, Edward Cheong, Bhaskar Kumar and Loveena Sreedharan) who currently provide a large range of both benign and malignant Oesophagogastric (OG) and benign Hepatobiliary services. Specifically, we are looking for a dynamic surgeon who can supplement and improve the oesophagogastric cancer and benign upper GI services for the extended region. The provision of minimally invasive oesophagogastric cancer resectional surgery is a significant component of the post holder's work. We have recently installed a fully integrated laparoscopic theatre suite to support minimally invasive cancer resections and aspire to commence a robotic service in the near future. The job includes the provision of an emergency oesophageal on call service.

Essential

  • Full GMC Registration
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via oCCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview) oCESR or oEuropean Community Rights
  • An appropriate higher surgical qualification.
  • JAG accreditation
  • Awarded Higher degree (MD/MS/PhD)

Desirable

  • Educational/Supervision training/qualification

Aptitudes

Essential

  • Good communicator
  • Capable of working in a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Enthusiasm for service development and teaching.

Desirable

  • Management skills / training.

Experience

Essential

  • Training in minimally invasive oesophagogastric cancer and benign surgery
  • Applicants who are Nationals from another European country or elsewhere overseas would have to show equivalence to the 5 years training period in the National Health Service required for the specialty
  • Training and expertise in children's safeguarding (training provided at the Trust)

Desirable

  • Experience in research (including research governance and grant application).
  • Published papers in area of special interest.
  • Post CCT fellowship
  • Evidence of a commitment towards developing robotic oesophago-gastric surgery.
  • Experience in MI oesophagogastric surgery
