Job summary

Applications are invited for the post of one year, fixed term, locum consultant in Histopathology. This is a replacement full time post and the successful applicant would join a team of 20 consultants.

Main duties of the job

The Histopathology team work in a purpose built modern, light and airy building on a green field site which has been commended for its design and infrastructure by external assessors. It is next to the research park and university campus in close proximity to the sports park equipped with a gym and pool. Each consultant has their own office with up to date IT equipment including voice-recognition software.

Workload is controlled by an innovative 'pull' system allowing consultants to choose and protect time dedicated to reporting, teaching, research and SPA activates. Plans for digital pathology are being developed to aid flexible working, teaching and research.

Over the next 5 years our aim is to undertake an ambitious recruitment program to develop strong specialist, academic and research activity with existing and evolving opportunities within the Trust and University. Our vision is to create a large and diverse department to provide individuals with personalised and flexible working patterns to support their professional interests and development.

The working environment is supportive and friendly; there are good relations with both clinical colleagues and academics at the UEA. The department and subspecialist teams support new consultants to help them adjust into their roles, gain experience and explore their interests. We have a newly opened Biorepository and are involved in the collection of samples for the Genomics England 100,000 Genome Project. The fantastic laboratory is UKAS accredited, fully staffed and BMS cut-up is well established. Private practice and work for HM Coroners are optional extras. A number of consultants work part- time and we actively encourage flexible working to ensure a healthy work/life balance.

Workload in most areas has increased in recent years however there is a particular need to strengthen our Gastrointestinal and urology teams. The configuration of responsibilities will be reviewed from time to time and the appointee will be expected to work with consultant colleagues to provide a reliable and expeditious service. There is no specific requirement to participate in the overall management of the service however working with and contributing ideas to the management team is expected.

  • FRCPath or equivalent
