Job summary
Applications are invited for the post of Primary Care / Cornea Consultant Ophthalmologist.
This is a full time; permanent post created in response to service demand and will expand the team of consultants to 15.
The candidate will help the department to develop anterior segment subspeciality pathways in conjunction with allied health professionals to help establish a multi-disciplinary workforce to ensure efficient management and deliver high quality care. The post will provide a link between the emergency eye clinic and the anterior segment services.
A particular focus of this job will be teaching and training to develop the allied health care professional workforce at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (NNUH). This will be aligned with the new national Ophthalmic Practitioner training program with emphasis on emergency eye care and cataract.
A candidate who is unable for personal reasons to undertake the duties of a whole-time post will receive equal consideration. If such a candidate is appointed the job content will be modified as appropriate in consultation with consultant colleagues and local management.

Main duties of the job
The objectives of this post are to provide
- Management of patients with conditions affecting the cornea and ocular surface
- Link between Ophthalmic Emergency Referral Service (OERS) and cornea clinic
- Cataract and corneal surgery and training 1-2 sessions per week
- 1 in 9 general ophthalmology on call

The Eye Department is located within the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, Cromer Hospital and Central Norwich Eye Clinic. Ophthalmic outpatients, the Nelson Day Unit and eye theatres are all adjacent to each other and the ward (head and neck) is nearby.

This is a new post and as such the timetable is up for discussion with the new appointee. It could potentially include evenings or Saturdays, Central Norwich Eye Clinic and Cromer as well as cross-site at James Paget University Hospital, following discussion with the successful candidate.

- Basic medical qualification (MB BS or equivalent)
