Job summary

This is a full-time consultant thoracic surgeon appointment. The successful applicant would join a team of four full-time and one locum consultant thoracic surgeons.

The appointee will work in the Department of Thoracic Surgery, which is currently under the directorate of General Surgery. This directorate encompasses thoracic, colorectal, breast and endocrine and upper gastrointestinal / hepatobiliary surgery.

Main duties of the job

The appointment is to the Trust, not to specific hospitals.

All consultants, including the appointee, will be expected to be involved in implementing the Trust's Clinical Governance programme. This includes active participation in clinical audit, quality, clinical guidelines/pathways, professional development, appraisal and risk management.

The appointee will be a member of the Consultant Staff Committee and be expected to serve on this committee.

Weekly clinics and MDT meetings whereby the thoracic surgeon is physically present are held at the outreach hospitals as mentioned above. Therefore a flexible approach to team working is important.

About us

The Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital (NNUH) thoracic service provides General Thoracic Surgical input to cover a population of 1.5 million people, from Norfolk and other parts of East Anglia incl. areas of Suffolk & Cambridgeshire.

The unit performs a comprehensive range of adult Thoracic surgical interventions. The resection rate is steadily increasing with 213 resection of primary lung cancer performed in 2018 (resection rate 19.5%) as per LCCOP data published in 2021. Thoracic malignancies form the mainstay of the work. The unit is a tertiary referral center with a weekly specialist lung cancer MDT meeting and an additional three regional Lung MDT across the network. The unit also runs weekly X-ray and ILD MDT meetings and monthly emphysema MDT. 70% of the lung cancer resections are performed via VATS technique. VATS thymectomy, VATS diaphragmatic plication and VATS mediastinal surgery has become a routine procedures. Robotic program was recently introduced and there are currently two fully robotically trained consultant leading the program. Sublobar resections with anatomical segmentectomies and sleeve resections are routinely performed in the unit. Lung resections for metastatic disease are also routinely performed after due discussion in the relevant MDT. The department provides full service for airway problems, including rigid bronchoscopy, laser, stenting and plan for development of cryotherapy. Thoracic surgeons provide service to all thoracic trauma patients.
