Job summary

We have a fixed term Band 7 post for a Clinical Psychologist interested in Neuropsychology in our large, friendly team at the Bennett Cente (North Staffs Combined Healthcare, a CQC rated Outstanding trust).

The post is available up to full time depending on candidate preference, fixed term until 31.03.2026. It's a great opportunity to gain general and specialised neuropsychology experience with expert supervision and fantastic team support. The role involves assessment, formulation and treatment of patients with neurological conditions and/or brain tumours. There is individual, peer and group supervision, CPD, research/audit and service development available. We offer flexibility for some home working, depending on service need.

Main duties of the job

To deliver neuropsychological assessment and intervention for outpatients in Neurology and Functional Neurological Disorder services

The postholder will work independently, with supervision from the Consultant Neuropsychologist

The postholder is accountable for their own professional practice in the delivery of psychological care to patients with complex neurological and functional neurological disorder conditions and associated psychological distress.

The post holder may be required to work with clients who are distressed, anxious or hostile.

To be compassionate in meeting the needs of patients, their carers' and family members.

To provide clinical supervision and training to less experienced colleagues within the service

To contribute to formal and informal research as an integral part of the post.

To be proactive in suggesting service improvement within own service area.

To promote at all times a positive image of the service and the wider Trust.

Provides specialist psychological and neuropsychological assessment of patients with complex neurological and functional neurological disorder conditions based on the appropriate use, interpretation and integration of data from a variety of sources/tools.

Skilfully selects, administers, scores up, analyses, interprets, and feeds back (both in person with patients and via report-writing) complex assessment data derived from a variety of sources including psychological assessment, self-report measures, informal and structured observations and medical information from notes and liaison with appropriate colleagues.

Responsible for recognising the potential for or signs of client harm, abuse or neglect, including poor clinical practice, effective and timely risk assessment and management, and reporting all such concerns and taking all reasonable steps to protect the client. Responsible for prioritising, identifying and reporting concerns regarding the safeguarding of children who may be at risk.

Formulates plans for, and delivers, specialist psychological therapy and/or management of clients presenting emotional/cognitive/behavioural/physical difficulties based upon an appropriate conceptual framework and evidence-based practice. Negotiates the implementation of such plans with clients and/or their carers, and members of the MDT.

Adjusts and refines psychological formulations drawing upon different explanatory models and maintaining a number of provisional hypotheses, and makes clearly communicated decisions about treatment options.

Delivers group interventions where appropriate to patients and evaluates/refines these in response to patient feedback.

Provides specialist psychological advice, guidance and consultation to other staff contributing directly to clients formulation and intervention plan.

Post-graduate doctoral level training in clinical / counselling psychology (or its equivalent prior to 1996) as accredited by the BPS, including models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics and neuropsychology, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology.

Experience

  • Working therapeutically within a clinical setting with a wide variety of client groups, across the whole life course and a range of clinical severity across a range of care settings.

Desirable

  • Experience working with patients with neurological conditions
