Job summary

We are seeking a Band 3 Maintenance Assistant

£24,071 - £25,674 per annum, full time 37.5 hours per week.

The role of Maintenance Assistant will provide a technical and manual service in maintaining the structure of the buildings, on behalf of North Staffordshire Combined Healthcare Trust. They will be responsible for ensuring that day-to-day maintenance tasks are recognised and completed within a satisfactory timescale. They will liaise with Healthcare Managers and other staff to provide a safe environment for the care of patients.

They will perform work activities that will be non-routine in a variety of different disciplines.The Maintenance Assistant must be committed to being versatile and flexible and they will be expected to undergo training to keep up to date with the Departmental operational requirement. They must also acquire through training, any relevant additional skills required for the post, in an effort to increase their knowledge and versatility.

Main duties of the job

  • Organise own workload, planning new installations and refurbishments and schedule works.
  • To provide and to receive routine and non-routine information to work colleagues, managers, contractors and customers, exchanging information and offering feedback where required.
  • To undertake a range of work procedures and practices both routine and non routine, which require an intermediate level of knowledge.
  • To apply concentration, whilst carrying out servicing, testing and repair on all types of buildings and equipment, where training and certification of competency allow, completing all report sheets and test certificates as necessary. There may be interruptions for emergencies.
  • Liaise with clinical staff, patients, clients, managers and customers where appropriate, offering non-clinical advice on safe use of equipment.
  • To undertake visual surveys and create a plan of required works.
  • To liaise with Facilities Managers and Estates Managers to organise, plan and prioritise the day to day working requirements and to carry these out with the minimum of supervision.
  • At all times adhere to Trust and Departmental Policies & Procedures, commenting, proposing and helping to implement any changes as appropriate.
  • Following a period of training the post holder must be competent to carry out duties in other craft disciplines to acceptable standards.

Job responsibilities

  • To assist where practicable to install, maintain, validate and problem solve on all types of buildings in accordance with the manufacturers instructions and relevant regulations.
  • To undertake craft duties and associated works,including all aspects of repair, maintenance and new works in all Combined Healthcare properties. Duties will include, but not be limited to: Planned preventative maintenance, reactive maintenance, minor new works and Minor Decoration Works.
  • To assist in the Planned Preventative Maintenance on all types of Buildings and Engineering infrastructure. Including but not limited to: Fire Alarms / Emergency Lights / Water Flushing, Water sampling, safe water temperatures, medical furniture and beds.
  • To plan and interpret work from method statements and risk assessments, problem solve faulty equipment and establish the best solution for the problem.
  • To perform all of the duties of the post as required with minimum supervision.
  • Support the induction of new starters and training of any colleagues.
  • To perform all of the duties of the post whilst frequently being exposed to working conditions, in areas such as roof spaces, inclement weather and plant rooms and where dust etc will be encountered.
  • Undertake heavy repairs and move heavy equipment or materials. This may be required frequently for several short periods during a shift.
  • To participate in the operation of the Estates CAFM system and by completing all maintenance related documentation, as necessary.
  • To carry a Trust Mobile at all times whilst on duty, and respond in accordance. (when safe to do so)
  • Flexible to work outside of normal working hours, if required.
  • Any other reasonable duties that may be determined from time to time.
  • General driving duties including, picking, packing, sorting and distribution supporting the Trust courier and logistics as required.

  • Must be able to work in accordance with Health & Safety Regulations, all relevant (HTM) Hospital Technical Memoranda and Building Regulations etc.
  • Must be able to use specialist fine tools and test equipment following a period of training to ensure the utmost accuracy as and when required, using highly developed physical skills
