Locum Consultant Psychiatrist in Substance Misuse Services - 12 Month Fixed Term:

We are delighted to seek applications for our Specialist Directorate for a Locum Consultant Psychiatrist.

You will be predominantly based on the Edward Myers Unit, Harplands Hospital.

The role will consist of 10 PAs as a Locum Consultant Psychiatrist in Substance Misuse Services, and you will engage with the development of your Job Plan.

Main duties of the job

Carry out new referral assessments, deliver therapy or refer to colleagues for relevant interventions, or to follow up patients for medication reviews.

o Formulate care and treatment plans, prescribe various types of treatment, and provide guidance on evidence-based treatment and effectiveness.

o Actively support patients and their families, communicating clinical information to explain a diagnosis and treatment options using various methods to ensure practical understanding.

o Communicate with patients and the wider multidisciplinary team on shared patient decision making.

o Work in and where appropriate, lead a multidisciplinary team.

o Assess and prioritise patient/client requirements, delegating effectively to others.

o Recognise, review, and report a patient's condition and any changes to the patient and the multidisciplinary team.

o Performing basic administrative and clerical tasks, such as keeping records of test results, writing prescriptions, providing information to patients, and monitoring treatment plans.

o Help teach and train other junior doctors and medical students and other multidisciplinary team members.

Job responsibilities

The Substance Misuse Service is one of four service lines sitting within the Specialist Directorate. The following services form the Substance Misuse Service Line:

Edward Myers Unit: The Edward Myers Unit is an NHS-run, medically managed inpatient detoxification service. The unit specialises in caring for people with severe and complex medical and/or psychiatric needs who require supervision in a controlled medical environment. A 24-hour planned programme of medical and nursing evaluation, care and treatment is provided to address the complex physical, mental health and behavioural needs of people with substance-related disorders. In addition to alcohol and opiate detoxification, the unit also treats people dependent on substances including (but not limited to): stimulants; Benzodiazepines; polysubstance abuse; prescription medication; and Novel Psychoactive Substances (NPS). The unit has strong partnerships with other agencies across the country and accepts NHS and private referrals from across the UK in addition to Change Grow Live (CGL) West Midlands Provider network.

Based at Harplands Hospital, the Unit strives to provide high-quality, recovery-focused, inpatient drug and alcohol detoxification for people with complex needs. Our specialist, multidisciplinary team is committed to providing the very best care for patients and their families. The teams innovative, person-centred approach supports people to achieve and sustain long-term recovery.

Stoke Community Drug and Alcohol Service (CDAS): Based predominantly at Hope Street Hanley in Stoke on Trent, The community Drug and alcohol service is based across two sites with bespoke areas to manage each substance. The service is a shared partnership with BAC and We Are With you, with NSCHT being the lead provider. The service offers treatment for addiction with pathways into rehabilitation and detoxification. The clinical offer provides opiate substitute treatments alongside psychosocial interventions to best manage the individual through their treatment journey and to exit services drug or alcohol free.

The service aims to provide an integrated substance misuse service, combining psychosocial interventions and clinical interventions to the service users with substance misuse complexities providing a recovery orientated model with the offer of rehabilitation and detoxification.

Community Hospital Alcohol Team (CHAT): The Community Hospital Alcohol Team (CHAT) is based at the Edward Myers Unit, in close proximity to the UHNM (University Hospital of North Midlands). The service offers treatment for alcohol addiction, working closely with emergency portal and ward based areas, to either prevent admission to UHNM or support on discharge with pathways into rehabilitation and detoxification. The clinical offer provides opiate alcohol treatments alongside psychosocial interventions to best manage the individual through their treatment journey and to exit services drug and alcohol free.

To service aims to provide a service, combining psychosocial interventions and clinical interventions to the service users with alcohol misuse complexities via a recovery-orientated model with the offer of rehabilitation and detoxification as well as the prevention of admission through emergency portals bridging the gap between hospital and community treatment for this bespoke client group.

Stoke Heath Prison: The integrated service is based within Stoke Heath Prison and comprises of multi -agency staffing from Rapt and clinical staff from NSCHT. The clinical team comprises of a consultant lead and other linking Trust doctors who provide dedicated session work supported by a nursing team with a lead non -medical prescribing nurse. Comprehensive clinical substance misuse and health assessments are completed by the team which guides the clinical intervention decision making and ongoing prescribing regime.

The service provide an integrated prison based substance misuse combining psychosocial interventions and clinical interventions to the service users with substance misuse complexities based on a recovery orientated model.
