Clinical Sister/Charge Nurse

Secondment, covering maternity leave for 12 months

37.5 hours per week

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced staff nurse to join the Melly leadership team on a 12 month secondment, covering maternity leave.

Main duties of the job

The post holder is responsible for clinical leadership through effective monitoring and implementation of standards and evidenced based practice; ensuring patients receive safe, high-quality care.

To provide direct management and facilitate learning and development within the nursing team.

Management of preceptor ship of newly qualified staff, return to nursing staff and the mentorship of nursing students and health care support workers.

Clinical

Take responsibility for the clinical leadership and direction of the nursing team.

Undertakes and documents a comprehensive, systematic, and accurate nursing assessment of the patient as appropriate.

Deliver a high standard of nursing care based on best practice to maintain patient safety and provide a good patient experience.

Creates and utilizes opportunities to promote health and well-being of patients in their care.

To undertake clinical shifts on ward area

Working within the NMC Guidelines and Trust Policies recognising ones own abilities and limitations.

  • To facilitate and build team working between nurses and multi-disciplinary team to effect high standards of care.
  • To understand mortality data and use knowledge of how nursing can contribute to increased mortality to determine ward standards. Use audit tools to monitor compliance with those standards.
  • Maintain a good standard of communication with the multi-disciplinary team and respect the confidentiality of patients, relatives, and colleagues.

Managerial

  • To assist the Ward Manager to review staffing requirements using a proactive approach to retention and recruitment of staff.
  • To support the Ward Manager to initiate and prioritize modernization developments within the Service as part of the business/strategic planning process.
  • Ensuring staffing levels within the area are adequate to provide safe and effective care delivery, maximising the resources that are available by competent duty rostering.
  • Through effective negotiation and political awareness create an environment for partnership working and dissemination of information across multi-disciplinary teams
  • To manage the financial resources for the ward area as delegated by Matron.
  • Support Lead Nurse in the recruitment and selection of new staff.
  • Lead the investigation of complaints and clinical incidents related to own clinical area and support the review of complaints in other areas as deemed appropriate by the Lead Nurse. Provide feedback to staff as appropriate.
  • Ensure information on the Ward/Department information system is correct and updated regularly as appropriate

Education and Training

  • To undertake annual reviews of education requirement of the ward team and developing training plans to submit the Lead Nurse.

  • To ensure own competence and own personal development plan is reviewed and discussed with the Lead Nurse annually.
