Main duties of the job
- The post holder will be/working towards being an independent nurse Endoscopist, with expert knowledge and skills in the field of endoscopy services. They will possess the skills and qualifications in independent endoscopic practice that meet the standards set by the Joint Advisory Group (JAG)/ partaking in the necessary training to achieve independence.
- Assist with the clinical leadership of the endoscopy service within the endoscopy management team through effective monitoring and implementation of standards and evidenced based practice, ensuring patients receive safe, high-quality care.
- To provide direct management and facilitate learning and development within the nursing team.
- To provide both clinical and non-clinical leadership to help in the management of the endoscopy unit.

Clinical
- Use highly developed specialist knowledge and skills to make informed decisions, working within a wide range of endoscopic procedures/guidelines to meet clinical needs of the patient and advise other members of staff accordingly, e.g., assess and investigate to obtain a diagnosis and treat accordingly, refer for further treatment options or refer back to GP with treatment suggestions etc.
- Demonstrate extended knowledge in obtaining Informed Consent from the patient in line with Government, BSG and General Medical Council guidelines, providing the patient with advantages, risks, disadvantages, and other diagnostic options available.
- Exercise a high degree of personal and professional autonomy, drawing upon highly specialist knowledge and experience to practice highly developed physical and professional skills of the highest order, e.g., diagnostic, and therapeutic lower and/ or upper GI endoscopies which often involve taking tissue biopsies, removing and treating colonic polyps etc. This requires complex physical skills to manipulate accessories during complex procedures.
- Working with the Lead Nurse, take responsibility for the clinical leadership and direction of the endoscopy team.
- Undertakes and documents a comprehensive, systematic and accurate nursing assessment of the patient as appropriate.
- Deliver a high standard of nursing care based on best practice to maintain patient safety and provide a good patient experience.
- Creates and utilizes opportunities to promote health and well-being of patients in their care.
- To undertake clinical shifts in the endoscopy unit as required.
- Working within the NMC Guidelines and Trust Policies recognising ones own abilities and limitations.
- To facilitate and build team working between nurses and multi-disciplinary team to effect high standards of care.
- To understand mortality data and use knowledge of how nursing can contribute to increased mortality to determine unit standards. Use audit tools to monitor compliance with those standards.
