Main duties of the job
- Work within the Colorectal Surgical Team and collaboratively within the multi-disciplinary team to ensure best practice and optimal outcomes for patients, under the direction of the Lead Colorectal Clinical Nurse Specialist.
- Provide clinical expertise and education in regards Colorectal Surgery and nursing care to ensure evidence based practice.
- Support the development of the colorectal service and assist with the formation of guidelines and policies that will contribute to the strategic direction of the service.

Key Responsibilities:
1.0 Clinical:
1.1 Deliver and promote high quality, evidence based practice for colorectal patients.
1.2 Work with the multi-disciplinary team to coordinate care and support to provide a seamless service and refer to other nursing services.
1.3 Act as role model, clinical expert and advocate for service users within the Trust and externally.
1.4 Providing an expert nursing assessment, plan and evaluation for patients within the sphere of responsibility for colorectal patients and to independently support all colorectal cancer patients prior to, during and after treatment.
1.5 Liaise with other nursing staff caring for clients within the specialty in order to provide specialist knowledge to optimise patient care.
1.6 Assist and perform clinical procedures associated with colorectal services.
1.7 To improve the patient experience by providing high quality specialist nursing care and advice working autonomously and as part of the multidisciplinary team.
1.8 Manages clinical caseload independently on an ongoing basis including making modifications within prescribed parameters. Reporting back to Lead Colorectal Nurse and the appropriate Consultant for further advice, discussion and guidance.
1.9 Request and interpretation of clinical procedures associated within colorectal services.
1.10 Actively participates in audit and relevant research within colorectal service.
1.11 Support and participate the implementation of changes in clinical practice that improve standards of care and health outcomes for patient in ensuring national standards are achieved.
2.0 Managerial:
2.1 Ensure that the collation of data reflects the level of service activity and patient.
2.2 Participate in the development of guidelines/ protocols for the colo-rectal team and Trust.
2.3 Participate in the development and monitoring of the enhanced recovery programmes.
3.0 Education/ training:
3.1 Provide education to other nursing staff and MDT members and other health professionals in formal and informal settings so they can be informed about the needs and management of the client group.
3.2 Provides education support for healthcare providers and healthcare consumers.
3.3 Participate in the development of education programmes to patients, carers and other nursing staff.
3.4 Promote the development of a climate which is conducive to life long learning and evidence based practice.
3.5 Act as a role model exploiting at every opportunity to enhance the knowledge of others in issues relating to the specialism.
3.6 Provides advice which contributes to the care, well-being or education of patients/clients including health promotion.

5.1 Take personal responsibility to maintain own learning and development to ensure the delivery of evidence based service and fulfil regulatory requirements.
