Main duties of the job

The Urology Team at George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust are recruiting for a Urology Nurse to join their established friendly Nursing and Consultant team. Experience of working within the Urology Speciality required.

The person will be able to work autonomously and within the multidisciplinary team. The Urology Nurse will be expected to carry out nurse led procedures and clinics. A key role of the post will be to provide specialist advice and support patients with urological conditions.

Purpose

To provide specialist advice to support the assessment, planning and management of patients accessing the Urology Service.

  • To provide clinical expertise within Urology Clinical team, acting as a role model in the delivery of patient care.
  • Carry out nurse led procedures and clinics.
  • The post holder will work closely with the multi-disciplinary team locally and externally to ensure standards of care maintained and work within the Urology service to promote service development within the speciality.
  • The Clinical Nurse will practice in collaboration with the lead CNS and wider multi-disciplinary team to assess, plan and implement patients care and provide highly specialist advice.
  • Act as a key worker to provide information and support for patients accessing the Urology Service.
  • The post holder will have the knowledge and skills to work autonomously managing his/ her caseload of patients.
  • The post holder is expected to act in a manner consistent with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct, carrying out his/her duties in accordance with Trust policies and procedures.

Main duties and Responsibilities

  • Ensure patient safety is maintained.
  • To undertake assessment, planning and evaluation of urology patients.
  • To promote a culture of demonstrable best practice and integrated evidence based practice.
  • To provide specialist clinical advice, support and education to professions/ staff and patients.
  • Act as patient advocate where relevant, facilitating informed discussion concerning treatment options and ensuring informed consent.
  • Work collaboratively and co-operatively with clinical colleagues to ensure a cost effective and quality Urology Service.
  • To work within the urology unit, carrying out nurse led procedures such as assessment of voiding conditions, bladder instillations, Hormone injections for prostate cancer, complex catheter changes and assisting with prostate biopsy/urodynamics.
  • Offering support and advice to ward areas in relation to Urological problems and where necessary provide outreach services
  • Ability to communicate and coordinate with the multi-professional teams locally, and with referring units.
  • The Clinical Nurse Specialist will initiate and contribute to improving patients pathways within the service.
  • Act as patient advocate where relevant, facilitating informed discussion concerning treatment options and ensuring informed consent.
  • Provide specialist information and support to urology patients in the urology unit/ward areas and OPD.
  • Participate in nurse led clinics to meet the patients need and service demand.
  • Establish and maintain effective communication with various individuals and groups on highly complex potentially stressful topics in a range of situations including supporting patients and their relatives/carers through the diagnosis, management and prognosis of urological cancer.
  • To have an understanding of the Mental Capacity Act and Deprivation of Liberty and be able to apply to this in clinical practice.
  • To have an understanding of safeguarding, being able to appropriately identify those patients at risk, managing referrals and assist with investigations in line with Trust Policy and Procedure.
  • To provide support and care for the patient and his/her family respecting their need for privacy and dignity.
  • Be professionally responsible for adherence to Trust policies and procedures.
  • Produce written communications which are clear, fluent, concise and easily understood.
  • Carry out nursing procedures and treatments in accordance with approved procedures.
