Main duties of the job

  • Deliver a high standard of nursing care without direct supervision, based upon a sound evidence base.
  • Undertakes and documents a comprehensive, systematic and accurate nursing assessment of the physical social and spiritual needs of the neonate and family where appropriate.
  • Creates and utilises opportunities to promote health and well-being of neonates, children and families in their care.
  • Take responsibility for the clinical leadership and direction of the SCBU team.
  • Influence and monitor the standards of direct patient care delivery in accordance with best practice and operational protocols and guidelines.
  • Working within the NMC Guidelines and Trust Policies recognising one's own abilities and limitations.
  • To facilitate and build team working and positive relationships between nurses and the wider multi-disciplinary team to effect high standards of care.
  • Act in accordance with local and regional safeguarding policies.

  • To work collaboratively with the Matron, lead Consultant and Divisional management team to review staffing requirements using a proactive approach to recruitment and retention.
  • To initiate and prioritise modernisation developments within the Service as part of the business/strategic planning process.
  • Ensuring staffing levels within the area are adequate to provide safe and effective care delivery. Maximising the resources that are available by competent duty rostering.
  • Through effective negotiation and political awareness create an environment for partnership working and dissemination of information across multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Lead the recruitment and selection of new staff.
  • Lead the investigation of complaints related to own clinical area and support the review of complaints in other areas as deemed appropriate.
  • Deputise for the Matron in his/her absence.
  • As part of the Directorate Team assist with the development and implementation of the Trusts Business Plan and Strategy for Nursing.
