Main duties of the job

Working with the Clinical Skills & Simulation Tutor the post holder will be responsible as a member of the clinical skills team for:

  • The development of the Clinical Skills Centre as an education resource which provides a safe and effective learning environment.
  • The delivery of multi-disciplinary clinical skills, simulation and resuscitation education for Trust staff and learners on placement.
  • The development and evaluation of clinical skills education programmes.
  • The development of multimedia technology-based education resources.
  • The development of simulation facilities and courses.
  • Research and audit for clinical skills education.
  • Line management of identified junior staff within the department.

Job responsibilities

Education, Service Improvement and Quality

  • To assist with the planning, development, delivery and assessment of specialised clinical skills education programmes within simulation for learners and Trust employees.
  • To set up and maintain equipment for teaching sessions as required.
  • To assist with the planning, organisation and scheduling of appropriate simulated clinical assessments for students on placement and clinical staff within the Trust.
  • To possess high levels of developed manipulation and dexterity skills required for educating health care professionals. These may include performing defibrillation, intravenous injections, peripheral cannulation, venepuncture, airway management, urinary catheterisation, suturing, arterial blood gas sampling, etc.
  • To influence patient and clinical safety through delivery of effective education and assessment programmes to ensure the safe use of highly complex equipment such as defibrillators and clinical skills equipment.
  • To continually seek to improve the quality of education through the use of evidence-based practice, liaising with professional colleagues, reviewing literature and evaluating feedback.
  • To act as a role model exploiting every opportunity to enhance the knowledge of others in issues relating to clinical skills and to promote health and safety and risk assessment.
  • To act as a mentor to Trust healthcare professionals wishing to further their teaching skills and experience through assisting as faculty members on clinical skills programmes and accredited courses run in the Clinical Skills Centre.
  • To develop specialist knowledge across a range of procedures related to clinical skills education and use this knowledge to relate theory to practice at degree level.
  • To work towards obtaining Resuscitation Council UK accredited instructor certificates, for Immediate Life Support Instructor and/or Paediatric Immediate Life Support.
  • To prepare for exposure at clinical emergencies, to possible contact with bodily fluids, smells, foul linen, possible exposure to sharps, ensuring compliance with Health and Safety standards at all times

  • To maintain a professional attitude at all times, developing the role of the Clinical Skills and Simulation Facilitator in the best interests of the patient and profession in accordance with their relevant professional body e.g. Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC)/ Health and Care Professions Council Code of Conduct.
  • To possess developed communication skills to enable excellent communication.
  • To cooperate and work well with others appreciating the roles of other staff and agencies involved in the care of the patients.
  • To communicate effectively with healthcare professionals and students who fail assessments/courses which could have implications for their immediate and future career prospects. Identify further educational needs, offer opportunities to meet those needs and inform the Clinical Skills & Simulation Tutor so that the relevant manager/consultant/educational supervisor can be informed.

  • To actively seek to improve teaching skills and knowledge.
  • To assist with the recruitment of staff, appraisals and attendance management.
  • To contribute to the production of annual reports for the Clinical Skills Centre.
  • To collate data using computerized systems to maintain Clinical Skills Education and Clinical Skills Equipment databases.

Leadership and Management

  • To assist with the development and implementation of a strategy and associated teaching and assessment resources for clinical skills education within the Trust.
  • To assist with clinical skills service development which impacts across the Trust and University Healthcare Schools to ensure compliance with nationally recognized guidelines.
  • To lead on specific delegated management issues and projects within clinical skills education and to continually seek new ways to expand the service.
  • To ensure the timely ordering, repair, procurement and maintenance of equipment and supplies for the Clinical Skills Centre, such as the provision of realistic simulation equipment and manikins for education purposes.
  • To develop an awareness of the financial and business aspects of the Clinical Skills Centre and to assist the Clinical Skills Simulation and Resuscitation Lead to ensure there is cost effective development within the finances available.
  • To actively participate as a member of the relevant education committees to ensure decisions and actions are disseminated and implemented within the Clinical Skills Centre strategy.
  • To provide specialist clinical skills advice and act as a resource, providing clinical expertise and support to all healthcare professionals, including medical and nursing staff in all aspects of clinical skills.

Research and Audit

  • To regularly audit own practice ensure knowledge and skills are kept up to date.
  • To maintain the clinical skills and resuscitation databases.
  • To ensure that attendance and assessment records for medical students and other staff are recorded correctly to enable end of block and annual reports to be provided.
  • To input all curriculum relevant training and assessments onto the relevant Warwick Medical School database.
  • To analyse education needs, skill competency attainment and maintenance.
  • To develop specialist knowledge in research and audit.
  • To assist the Clinical Skills Tutor in coordinating and implementing research in relation to clinical skills and medical student education

Effort

  • Prepare to be frequently required to exert moderate physical for several short periods during a working day, walking at a pace and long distance throughout the hospital site, working in an awkward position or confined space, or lifting, pushing, pulling heavy equipment and manikins when preparing for training sessions and courses.
