Main duties of the job

  • Team leader and line manager for other reporting Radiographers within the department.
  • Responsible for the efficient utilization of the reporting Radiographers.
  • Responsible for appropriate turnaround times for reporting Radiographers.
  • To deputise for the Plain Film Lead Radiographer as required and participate in the smooth running of the department.
  • Provides a specialist and tailored service which contributes to diagnosis and treatment.
  • Participates in review of working practices which impacts on service delivery to patients and other specialities.
  • To participate in the implementation of improvement programmes for service modernization.
  • To attend national, regional and local meetings for professional and service development.
  • To attend and participate in Radiology department management meetings.
  • To deal with face-to-face, telephone, email and written complaints from service users, members of the public, patients, their relatives and referrers.
  • To provide leadership, supervision, advice and support to the radiographic and non-medical radiology department staff.
  • To undertake and participate in the investigating, recording and reporting of accidents/incidents in accordance with Trust policy.
  • To participate in the annual appraisal process of staff within the Radiology department.
  • To participate in Human Resources matters in Diagnostic Radiology, including recruitment, selection of all levels of non-medical staff.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • Point of contact for other professionals to assess complicated referrals for appropriateness.
  • To produce a written diagnostic report on radiographs to their referring clinician using specialised knowledge and training, under the agreed protocol for the range of practice, to assist in patient management which contributes to diagnosis and treatment.
  • Liaise with requesting clinicians with regard to appropriateness of request and report adverse findings.
  • Using specialist knowledge for interpreting, reporting on patient conditions, diagnosing from a range of options; possibly conflicting interpretation, recommending further actions and changing practice.
  • Act independently to perform radiographic examinations, to the highest standard in accordance with department protocols and guidelines, using professional judgement, skills and experience; is not directly supervised, is accountable for own professional actions at all times, including in emergency and lone working situations.
  • Provide verbal advice to clinicians on the nature of a diagnostic image and optimal examination to achieve diagnosis.
  • To maintain high ethical and professional standards in appearance and attitude as within the guidelines published by the College of Radiographers and adhering to the statement of conduct as approved by the Radiographers Board, Health and Care Professions Council.
  • To assume responsibility of a practitioner under IR(ME)R 2017 in the justification of referrals for radiographic examinations from medical and nursing staff as specified in the departmental protocols and referral guidelines.
  • To participate in the red dot system to identify and mark abnormalities on plain films in order to assist referring clinicians interpret images.
  • To supervise the work of reporting Radiographers, Radiographers, student Radiographers and Radiology Department Assistants.
  • To participate in the major incident procedure as required.
  • To be reflective, independent and autonomous in high standards of patient care and service provision.

  • BSc or the Diploma of the College of Radiographers in Diagnostic Radiography.
  • Registration with the HCPC
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Image Reporting (PgD)
