Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will deploy the A-EQUIP model of advocating and educating for quality improvement (NHS England 2017), which provides a continuous improvement process that builds upon personal and professional resilience of midwives to enhance the quality of care for women.
This role is an integral part of the maternity service. You will be expected to collaborate with the local quality & safety, governance and practice development teams, providing professional advice and supporting quality improvement. You will also be part of the regional network of PMAs.
The successful candidate would be accountable to the Associate Director of Midwifery and report directly to the Clinical Governance Lead.
You will also have an on-call commitment to support the service as part of the escalation policy.

The Professional Midwifery Advocate will use the A-EQUIP (Advocating for Education and Quality Improvement) approach to support all midwives to improve system performance and the experiences of midwives and women.
The A-EQUIP model is based on four distinct functions:
- Restoration Clinical supervision
- Personal Action for Quality Improvement
- Education and Development
- Monitoring, evaluation and quality improvement
The model supports a continuous improvement process that aims to build personal and professional resilience, enhance quality of care, and improve outcomes, whilst developing leadership capability. It also aims to ensure that through staff development, action to improve quality of care becomes an intrinsic part of everyones job, every day, in all parts of the system.
The A-EQUIP model is also designed to support women through advocating for their needs, providing direct support for women within a restorative approach and undertaking quality improvement in collaboration with women.
You will be pivotal in providing professional leadership to midwives by embedding the A-EQUIP model of support. You should be an enthusiastic and visionary leader, being able to influence others through education and multidisciplinary working.
You will be expected to support midwives by providing and promoting regular sessions of restorative clinical supervision (RCS) and championing a culture of openness, reflection and professional resilience.
