Job summary

The Speciality Doctor post in anterior segment is for a full time 10.0 PA career doctor. The post is for an initial 12 months in the first instance. This post is suitable for a person who wishes to undertake a range of duties in the Victoria Eye Unit and in our associated peripheral clinics, focusing on glaucoma, cornea and medical retinal disease.

The degree of responsibility given to the appointed doctor will be commensurate with his/her experience and managed by the clinical lead & consultant ophthalmologists in the Hospital Eye Service. The timetable will necessarily be flexible to fit with the needs of the service; an out-of-hours on-call commitment is also expected.

An example timetable is included purely for guidance and details will be altered depending on skills and experience of the individual, needs of the department, and the number of sessions contracted for. Applications will be considered from candidates wishing to work part-time.

Main duties of the job

The appointed Specialty Doctor will work in hospital and community clinics within Herefordshire and see new and old patients, following protocols and patient referral and treatment pathways.

Good patient and staff communication is essential.

The appointed Specialty Doctor will be involved in the training and supervision of junior members of medical staff, nursing and technical.

The appointed Specialty Doctor will be expected to have good working knowledge of general ophthalmic diagnoses that might be encountered in practice. Evidence based and protocol based decision making is expected, under the supervision of the consultant or clinical lead.

There will be on-call duties as part of the post. The post is non-resident.

The appointed Specialty Doctor undertakes, exceptionally, to perform additional duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.

Essential

  • Full GMC registration with Licence to Practise
  • Qualifications & Experience - Shall have completed at least 4 years' full time post graduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part time or flexible basis) at least two of which will be in a specialty training programme in a relevant specialty or as a fixed term specialty trainee in a relevant specialty or shall have equivalent experience and competencies

Desirable

  • Qualifications and Experience - DRCOphth, MCROphth, FRCOphth or equivalent
  • Qualifications and Experience - 12 months experience of working in the NHS
  • A specialist interest or skill

Experience & Knowledge

Essential

  • Ability to perform on-call duties independently with senior support off-site, including triage and management of emergency cases
  • Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on range of problems both emergency and elective within specialty
