Lead Pharmacist - AMS, Infectious Diseases & OPAT

Job summary

This Lead Pharmacist role will be a lead for antimicrobial stewardship within the Trust, working closely with the Consultant microbiologists, Infectious Disease Specialists and designated clinicians to be a role model and champion for Antimicrobial Stewardship (AMS), and infection prevention. The post holder will provide strategic leadership and direction for AMS, Infectious Diseases and OPAT services across the organisation. The post holder will lead on service development, performance monitoring and manage governance related issues for all of the relevant services.

The post holder will be part of the MDTs for OPAT, and other complex infections using skills, specialist knowledge and experience to directly impact on patient care. They will be responsible for coordinating AMS audits, reports, and maintaining and updating the Trust antibiotic guidelines and the Eolas app.

The post holder will be responsible for the implementation of clinical guidelines regarding infectious diseases e.g. Coronavirus (COVID-19) treatment, and providing strategic pharmaceutical oversight to the Trust regarding staff vaccination programmes. There will also be operational commitment to the Pharmacy service including weekends, bank Holidays, late nights and On Call (Emergency Duty Service) on a formal rota.

Main duties of the job

Clinical Responsibilities:

  • Use specialist knowledge of medicines to provide advice within a multi-disciplinary team of doctors, nurses, patients, carers and pharmacy staff on all pharmaceutical aspects of care. Receive and deliver highly complex, confidential and potentially contentious clinical information.

  • To communicate highly complex, sensitive, and potentially contentious information regarding antimicrobial therapy and infectious disease management to a wide range of stakeholders.

  • To provide expert advice to clinical staff outside of Pharmacy as part of MDT discussions, ensuring national guidelines are being adhered to and medication regimes/treatment plans are appropriate.

  • To be able to interrupt and disseminate clinical information to the relevant stakeholders.

  • Designing and adjusting service delivery models in response to national guidance, local needs, and audit outcomes.

  • Leading the planning and execution of research, audits, and quality improvement initiatives, including setting objectives, timelines, and resource allocation.
