Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen at Wye Valley NHS Trust (WVT) for a Specialist Biomedical Scientist to join our Blood Sciences Department. We are looking for a keen, enthusiastic Biomedical Scientist with an interest in developing services to help us to implement our new managed laboratory service equipment in the pre-analytical area of the Blood Sciences laboratory.

WVT is an excellent place to train and develop new skills, and further study will be supported. Therefore, this post will be open to individuals who don't yet have the IBMS Specialist portfolio providing they are committed to completing the portfolio with the support of the department.

The Blood Sciences Department is committed to providing training opportunities to help staff to develop the skills and knowledge they require to excel in their career as a Biomedical Scientist. Opportunities include:

The post holder will rotate through Haematology and Blood Transfusion or Clinical Chemistry in order to participate in the 24/7 service.

Main duties of the job

The post holder would support with the implementation of the new managed laboratory service equipment in the pre-analytical area of the Blood Sciences laboratory. This will involve reviewing existing practices and workflows and suggesting changes to allow for successful implementation of automation. On completion the post holder would then be responsible for routine operation including training and competency assessment, troubleshooting and review of practices.

The post holder will provide support to the Blood Sciences Management Team in implementing policies and procedures to ensure the department continues to comply with the requirements of ISO 15189 in order to maintain UKAS accreditation.

There will be a strong focus on ensuring analyser performance, including training staff to undertake these processes appropriately and troubleshoot any issues.

The post holder will also take a leading role in the specimen reception area to ensure a high quality service is provided. This will include supporting with the development of training and competency assessments and records, delivery of training, incident management and participation in the audit programme.

They would also work alongside the specimen reception supervisor and relevant section managers to ensure smooth running of the 24/7 Blood Sciences service.
