Job summary

The post holder will help to deliver quality care in cast application / removal with direct supervision and Orthopaedic Outpatient Service.

The post holder will contribute to their own development by preparing to undertake the British Casting Certificate. The post holder will contribute to the development and evaluation of clinics in relation to the Plaster Room Service and trauma and orthopaedic outpatients.

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Plaster Technician Team at Wye Valley NHS Trust, as a Trainee Plaster Technician. Whilst working in the post you will be supported in undertaking a British Casting Certificate, and the team will work with you to build up your competencies within the role. The team are also in the process of organising a virtual open day, the date of which is yet to be confirmed.

Main duties of the job

  • To assist the Plaster Technicians in effectively and efficiently prioritising the patient caseload within the Plaster Room, informing waiting patients of reason for delays.
  • To adhere to all safe systems of work applicable to the work area.
  • To ensure own learning to meet the trainee role in preparation for undertaking the British Casting Certificate.
  • Assist in the assessment of care needs and Casting requirements and the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care.
  • Communicate and co-operate with all members of the multidisciplinary team, and work closely with all staff of relevant departments to ensure effective liaison.
  • To assess wounds and apply minor dressings prior to the application of a cast under supervision.
  • To correctly apply splints following clinical assessment.
  • To identify potential problems as a result of cast application and instigate measures to eliminate / minimise the risk.
  • To reaffirm the treatment outlined by the clinician in relation to the cast and what is expected of the patient and supply appropriate written material for cast care.
  • To give, and record, appropriate information for patients seeking telephone advice for cast care follow-up.
  • To assist clinicians in the manipulation of fractures and removal of K wires in the plaster room.
  • To maintain accurate documentation of care is given in the medical notes.
