Job summary

This is a fixed term appointment for a period of up to three years based wholly at Wye Valley NHS Trust in Hereford where the successful applicant will join our friendly and enthusiastic education team to develop medical education through hi-fidelity practical simulation for both undergraduates and postgraduates. The post is for two days a week which can be delivered flexibly to suit the needs of the post holder and the Trust.

There is a fully equipped Simulation Suite including a range of simulation manikins, from neonate to elderly person, which provides a further dimension to medical teaching in Hereford aligned with a multi-professional Clinical Skills and Simulation Academy (HASTE). The Trust has an Education Directorate which supports and promotes shared learning across multi-professional groups.

We combine these excellent educational opportunities with the friendly, supportive nature of a small district general hospital and the beauty of life in the Wye Valley.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will help to co-design and deliver education courses designed to support trainees and multi-disciplinary team members in acute specialties such as ED, Acute Medicine, Anaesthesia and Obstetrics (PROMPT), with a view to running in situ simulation as part of a quality assurance and improvement programme. The post holder will also run regular simulation teaching sessions for the undergraduates of the Universities of Birmingham, Aston and Three Counties medical schools in accordance with their described learning objectives.

About us

Hereford County Hospital is an associated teaching hospital of the University of Birmingham (UoB) Medical School, the University of Aston Medical School and the Three Counties Medical School (TCMS). We also accept Physician Associate students from the University of Worcester. The Head of Academy, Dr Lisa Penny, leads a team of Senior Academy Tutors, Teachers and Education Fellows. The Academy has been highly praised for its friendly atmosphere and has the lowest student: teacher and student: patient ratios in the West Midlands ensuring good access to clinical teaching.

Student numbers vary during the academic year to a maximum of 70 students on site.

We have 20 Clinical Education Fellows who split their time 50:50 between Education and clinical work & are integral to our provision of high quality undergraduate teaching.

Postgraduates

Hereford delivers a Foundation Programme at both FY1 and FY2 level including clinical placements, a full educational programme and both clinical and educational supervisors for all the trainees. We have onsite training programme directors for each year of the programme. We have a thriving GPVTS rotation with 3 training programme directors who are local GPs. We are also a provider for a variety of specialty training programmes and we support CESR development programmes for SAS doctors. We also offer student and qualified practitioner development for Physicians Associates and Advanced Clinical Practitioners in our Advanced Practice Academy.

Job responsibilities

This new and unique fellow post is designed to attract doctors who wish to explore medical education through hi-fidelity practical simulation for both undergraduates and postgraduates.

The post will be for 2 days a week which can be delivered flexibly to suit both the candidate and the Trust. It will be for a fixed term of three years to give the candidate the opportunity to develop and assess quality improvement initiatives within simulation in the wider Trust.

The post holder will help to co-design and deliver education courses designed to support trainees and multi-disciplinary team members in acute specialties such as Acute Medicine, ED, Anaesthesia and Obstetrics (PROMPT), with a view to running in situ simulation as part of a quality assurance programme. The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Develop/ expand their skills in Human Patient simulation (HPS) and Medical Education
  • Be able to act independently in operating the simulation manikins
  • Take on a senior role within the Simulation faculty and undertake the responsibilities of an advanced and expert simulation debriefer
  • Act as a peer reviewer for less experienced debriefers
  • Be responsible for developing, planning and delivery of skills training and simulation courses within WVT working alongside clinical specialists
  • Prepare and produce resources and IT materials required to support the aforementioned skills training and simulation courses
  • Develop simulation teaching packages which reflect current evidence and policy based practices
  • Work in close collaboration with the MDT to ensure the development of patient-focused, collaborative protocols / practices / procedures and care
  • Identify scope for & further develop multi-disciplinary teaching and learning within the Trust
  • Actively participate in clinical governance within simulation
  • Regularly participate as faculty on simulation training days
  • Participate in quality assurance, evaluation and audit of programmes aligned to the standards set by ASPiH
  • Assist in the development and progress of faculty members
  • Act at all times in accordance within the GMC's standards, codes of conduct and scope of professional practice
